"A gateway server is an important component of the SCOM management group. It is a server that lies outside the boundaries of the main domain on which the SCOM management server is installed. The agents external to the domain pass their information to the management server via the gateway. The benefit of having a gateway server is that it reduces network security vulnerability. It also minimizes the number of SSL certificates required for communication between the agents and the management server."
