"SCOM is an agent-based monitoring tool. What this means is that Microsoft Monitoring Agents or MMA's need to be installed on each piece of hardware in the network. These agents collect information and relay it back to the SCOM management server for analysis and presentation to the operators. The drawback of this is that the agents add overhead to both the servers and the network. However, this is negligible except in very high-performance environments."
