The interviewer is getting at what your long term plan is and how long you may stay at their school. If you plan on retiring as a principal, share that with the interviewer. If you are unsure of what may come next, it is ok to be honest about that as well, but you should be able to commit a few years to their school in order to have any impact. Adjusting to a new principal is hard on a school community, so share that you will be committed to the school if hired as principal.

"I plan on remaining a principal for several years to come. I want to plant myself in a school community and do all that I can to help it flourish. I'm not quite sure if I'll retire as a principal, but I plan on working in the schools for many years to come. I also hope to one day mentor new principals to pass on all the knowledge I've acquired throughout my career."
