Your interviewers want to see that you are confident enough to take the initiative when the opportunity arises during your time in their dental school program. Most dental training programs don't provide formal leadership training, so your interviewers want to know that you can join their program as a natural leader. As you advance to the final years of dental school, you may be leading teams of junior students, and your interviewers will want to hear that you can lead others with success.

"Growing up and into my college years, I was a natural leader to my peers. That is evident in my years as a team captain in the team sports I participated in. I am the type of person that leads through solid communication and leading by example. I believe in being a positive influence and building confidence in others through positive reinforcement. Looking to go into private practice after dental school, I think these skills will help me build a solid team within my practice."

Before your dental school interview, take some time to reflect on your leadership qualities and come ready to describe the qualities. Describe any job, project, or learning experience in which you saw a chance to lead and took advantage of it. Talk about the success of the project and your biggest takeaway from the experience. If you have direct work experience where you successfully led others, talk about that experience with your interviewing team.
