Manual dexterity is an essential skill for a dentist to possess. As unexpected as this factor may seem, it's a critical key to your success as a dentist. To have manual dexterity is to possess the ability to use your hands in a very coordinated way, which allows you to make small, precise movements. The interviewers want to see that you possess this skill and have a plan to boost your manual dexterity during your dental training.

"I have excellent manual dexterity as well as good hand-eye coordination. I have played the piano from the age of four and believe this training helped me develop the dexterity needed from a very young age. Of course, as a dentist, I must continue to develop my dexterity for further skill and expertise. To keep training myself, I have recently taken up drawing and plan to teach myself to cross-stitch. I thoroughly enjoy working with my hands and am eager to apply this enjoyment to my work as a dental professional."

Your dexterity levels are so crucial that even The Dental Admission Test (DAT) holds a section to test your dexterity skills. Many dental school admission interviewers will ask about your dexterity and how you plan to develop these skills further. Many fun activities can help you to increase your dexterity levels. These activities include painting, drawing, sewing, knitting, cross-stitching, and even learning a musical instrument! Talk to the interviewer about your dexterity levels, and include details on how you will continue to boost your manual dexterity.

"Yes, I have excellent manual dexterity. I learned how to sew when I was ten years old, and dexterity is needed to thread needles and run the thread through the sewing machine and bobbins. My hands are very steady, which will contribute to my becoming a skilled dentist. I plan to boost my dexterity during dental training by learning to play the guitar. My parents bought me a guitar as a graduation gift and paid a guitar teacher to train me for three months. I am sure that training will enhance my dexterity even greater."
