"This question does hit close to home as I've seen more and more of the young staff on my unit doing this in the recent years. It almost makes me want to go back to the time where cell phones didn't exist! When I have witnessed staff playing or texting on their phones when there was other work to be done, I have simply walked up to them and reminded them of the cell phone policy my employer has. For some, they are not aware of the policy and simply put their phone away. For a few others, they will put it away only to have it back out later. For these people, I then remind them that we are all working as a team on the unit and their use of their phone is taking them away from work, thus putting more work on our shoulders. This education usually curbs the behavior for good. For one particular co-worker, the phone was a major issue day in and day out and I didn't hesitate to bring the issue forward to my manager once I had exhausted all options."
