At REI, retail or sales experience is useful, but it's more important that REI employees exude a passion for the outdoors, a desire to collaborate with their teammates, an innovative mind, and an ability to build rapport with customers from every walk of life. Talk to the interviewer about any retail experience you have, or describe any experience that makes you suited to accomplish the tasks and assignments of an REI employee.
