Working in any healthcare position requires empathy and compassion. The Mayo Clinic wants team members who possess these qualities to provide exceptional customer service to all patients. Assure the interviewer that you will be a good fit for the team if hired.

Focus on ensuring the hiring manager understands you are a compassionate person. You can say you are compassionate and empathetic, but describing a time you helped others is a better way to let the interviewer know. For example, you can mention your volunteer experience, how you took care of an elderly relative, helped your neighbors, or took someone in who was down on their luck. Give an example that shows you have compassion for others.

"Yes, I am a very compassionate person and have been my entire life. I was always the one to stick up for kids being bullied at school and give my lunch money to those less fortunate than me. I believe you need to be compassionate and empathetic to work in this field and feel honored to have the opportunity to provide compassion to my patients and their family members."

Yes, I do. I have a human-centered leadership approach, always asking "How was your weekend?" is a small way to acknowledge someone as a full person and not just a worker at the company.
