This question tests how you cope with stressful situations in real-time. No need to wonder if they've already conversed with your previous employer. In most states, previous employers will disclose very little about your previous employment and work history, out of the concern of defamation lawsuits resulting from heresy. Best to be honest anyway, while coming across as confident and relaxed. The more confident you seem, the greater confidence the interviewer will have in the truth of your answer.
