Why did you leave your last job?

Focus on being direct and honest, explaining why you left your last place of employment. If you gave notice, were laid off, or fired, describe the circumstances behind your leaving. Be sure to end your response positively and tell the interviewer how excited you are to have the opportunity to interview for the position with their company.

"I left my last job because there was no room for professional growth or advancement. I want to work in a supervisory position, but that was not possible in my previous place of employment because of the company structure. I gave my two weeks' notice and left on good terms. I have an excellent letter of recommendation if you would like a copy for your records."

"I left my last job after working there for twelve years because my department was understaffed. The administrators did not want to hire additional employees, so I worked sixteen-hour days, six days a week. I do not mind working long hours occasionally, but this went on for two years, and I was missing so much in my kids' lives. I realized it was time for a change, so I applied to Austin Health because of your reputation and a more stable schedule."
