When I researched the veterinary industry, it seemed apparent that one of the significant challenges the industry faces is for veterinary practices to keep on top of changing standards, emerging trends, and new drugs, therapies, and treatments in the field. The industry is ever-changing, and therefore vets must remain abreast with new legislation, laws, and practices to continue to provide relevant services. The ways that I manage to stay in touch with current issues that may affect the veterinary community is by checking BBC news health every day, as well as reading magazines such as InPractice and checking websites such as the RCVS.

I think a huge problem that the veterinary profession faces at this moment in time is the rise of antibiotic resistance in livestock. In India and China alone, 73% of antibiotics are used in animals raised for food. The meat production has risen in South America, Asia, and Africa in recent years and so the demand for antibiotics has increased. Antibiotics are used in livestock as it means that more energy is conserved instead of them fighting disease. The future of antibiotic resistance does not look good.

In my opinion, I feel that the biggest challenge the veterinary industry faces currently is the high suicide rate and substance abuse. I think the reason for this is that most individuals do not know how to cope with this stressful and emotional career. How I plan to deal with this emotional and stressful career is by talking with my family and mentor and knowing that I have tried my best.

The UK's exit from the EU is one of the biggest challenges facing the veterinary industry because there is so much uncertainty. Almost 50% of vets come from overseas and if the immigration rules become more strict, some may not be able to stay in the UK. Those who are planning to work in the UK could be discouraged from doing so. Brexit could also lead to the dismissal of many pro-animal welfare laws. It could be a massive step in the wrong direction.

One of the biggest challenges in the veterinary industry is the lack of vets staying in clinical practice. Many vets move onto managerial or business-related roles as there is a lot more money in these roles, and veterinary practice can be a very stressful environment. I think this is a big issue as it means fewer senior veterinarians in the industry as many of them move onto other careers.

I think a really important dilemma in the veterinary industry is the lack of diversity. It's in every essence vital to have vets of different walks of life for numerous reasons. First of all, different life experiences can help us innovate and progress as a profession. Secondly, clients will feel more comfortable to go to the vets if there is a representation of their cultural and socioeconomic background. Thirdly, and just as importantly, it can help prevent feelings of isolation for minorities in an already intensive profession.
