Some engineers aspire to reach upper level management roles, while others are more content to become technical experts in their field and hammer out design calculations and work on complex projects. There are also engineers who aspire to a middle ground type of role where they manage younger staff members. It's important to know what you value for yourself as an engineer in your own career. This question is important for interviewers so that they can gauge how you fit in with their firm's long-term plan.

I think the biggest goal in my career would be making a difference in the community through the project I work on and contributing towards sustainability-based designs. I would also like to become a partner in a design firm or have my own design firm and help mentor new engineers to think creatively and thoughtfully.
