True Vertical Depth is measured from the surface to the bottom of the borehole or anywhere along its length. The MD is the length of the borehole itself. The TVD is always equal to or less than the MD. In a vertical well, the TVD will equal the MD, but in a directional or horizontal well, TVD and MD will differ.
