Email segmenting is one of the best strategies to keep customers engaged and avoid having your emails deleted without being opened. The interviewer wants to know you understand this component of email marketing and know how to use it to your advantage when creating content.
Focus on describing any experience you have with email segmenting. Demonstrate that you understand best practices for using consumer behavior and data to drive segmentation decisions. If you aren't familiar with this topic, research it before the interview.
"I am familiar with email segmenting; sending out mass emails to consumers without segmenting is a mistake. No one wants to read emails about topics or products they aren't interested in. Segmenting emails based on demographics like gender and age is one way to maintain low "unsubscribe" rates and boost open and click-through rates. I know there are more targeted ways to segment emails too, and I'm excited to learn more about them."
