The term Dalvik is common within the Android programming environment. This was the original runtime developed for early versions of the Android OS. It has since been discontinued and replaced by the Android Runtime, or ART. Even though the Dalvik Virtual Machine and Runtime are no longer used, you still need to know about it and be able to answer questions asked by the interviewer. You may want to use the past tense when discussing Dalvik to demonstrate that you understand it has been succeeded by ART.

It provided Android devices the ability to execute multiple instances of virtual machines. Dalvik has since been replaced by the Android Runtime and AVM. However, it is still in use by some older applications running earlier versions of the Android OS."
