Why are you the best candidate for us?

Next Question

Common Interview

  1. 1.

Why are you the best candidate for us?

      The Goal

Essentially, the interviewer is asking why they should hire you over anyone else. When it comes to hiring decisions, a company will choose the person they believe will help them solve a problem or a pain point. For this reason, the goal of your response is to clearly outline how you will address and help solve the hiring company's most significant needs and pain points.

      What to Avoid

Avoid a response like, 'I am the best candidate because this is my dream job.' An answer like this is all about you, the job seeker, and not about the hiring company or how hiring you will benefit them.

Another common mistake is to respond by giving a general overview of your resume or work history. Your response should spotlight the reasons why your achievements, skills, and characteristics are a match for the hiring company's most pressing needs.

      Pro Tip

This question is an opportunity to pitch yourself. The hiring company needs to understand how saying 'yes' to you will benefit them. You can also imagine that the interviewer is asking, 'What's in it for us if we hire you.' Consider telling a story along with your response. Studies show that when we provide an anecdote or a story, we become immensely more memorable.

      How to Answer

Carefully look at the job description and dissect what the hiring company is genuinely looking for in a candidate. Try to uncover what problem the company is trying to solve by filling this role. Be prepared to discuss a few of your hard skills and soft skills that you know will help you succeed in the job. Hard skills are specific knowledge gained through training and education. Soft skills are traits you possess, like emotional intelligence and sociability.

Also, be prepared to talk about the present and the future. Rather than thinking only in the now, help the interviewer imagine you in the role for years to come.

"I am an extremely dedicated employee. At my current position, I will pull the hours needed to complete a task with no questions asked. I help lead our team and am usually the person someone will go to to help solve their issue. I take personal pride in a project being successful and not harping on how we got there or who did what, instead, focusing on the fact that we did get there. I not only have the career background for this position but also have the experience as an end user with your software. I know how it is on both sides and can use my experience to help our end users."

"How I lead mirrors the values of my current employer. My people skills allow me to help lead employees to work harder for me, and in turn, the patients feel that. Patient care has always been a priority to me as well as being efficient and seeing the big picture of how we can be better."

      Rachelle's Answer

The fact that everyone wants to work hard for you is a great answer! Do you have firmer stats on how much you have increased productivity in your current role? To make a stronger impact, try incorporating numbers and facts versus all feelings. This answer should be a blend of both.

      Rachelle's Answer

Be more specific on your technology experience. This interview question is one of the most critical for any interview so it's important that you do an exceptional job 'selling' your skills to the interviewer.

"I am the best candidate for you because I am an expert user in {technology}, with a complete understanding of {technology or industry}. As a manager, I show the ability to lead a team with integrity and accountability."

"I am the best candidate because I understand what it takes to be a part of something great. I have been a part of great teams and have had the opportunity to excel and exceed quotas for 5 years. I have been promoted twice within a year and a half and have been mentored by leaders who care about the company's success, not just themselves. This, in turn, has been invaluable to my development as a salesperson and a valued team member."

      Rachelle's Answer

Success breeds success! Your answer is confident and unique. I recommend adding in details regarding some of your career highlights so that you can bring this answer to life even further.

"Firstly, I have relevant tertiary qualifications in xxx and xxx fields. Also, I have relevant technical skills such as xxx and xxx. Secondly, I have analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. I have a strong learning ability and a can-do attitude. My academic background supports me to learn new knowledge and skills quickly and implement it accurately. Finally, I have a passion to use my knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems in this industry."

      Marcie's Answer

Rather than starting with your tertiary qualifications, start your answer with your top qualifications instead. Re-ordering your answer will make it stronger. But you've done a great job of listing the skills and knowledge you have that show you're an ideal fit for this role. Don't forget to also mention your internship and work experience and how that ties in as well. Nice job!

"My seven years of experience at my previous company show my dedication. In my three years of working in another country, I gained a lot of international work experience, and have worked with many cultures. On the sales floor, I can create a fun environment in which my team can work."

      Rachelle's Answer

Try to dig a bit deeper, touching on what you bring that other candidates do not. For instance, do you speak multiple languages or have an educational background that will specifically benefit the company? Perhaps you blow your sales targets to oblivion every week :) Brainstorm a few ways you are unique! Your international experience is one reason, so you may want to address that in a more strategic way.

"You should hire me because I show a dedication rarely seen in retail. When I started at Apple, I did not have a strong technical background. That didn't stop me from becoming the #1 sales person in the company within six months. I am a competitive achiever, passionate for international business and learning new cultures. You won't be disappointed when you hire me."

I succeeded in driving product quality and process improvement by opening over 30 improvement investigations. Lastly, I have a highly driven work ethic that inspires others to do their best and improve."

For example, to support your statement about being hardworking, share that you have consistently received exceptional performance reviews from your supervisor. You can also talk about what makes you well-rounded. Have you worked in multiple specialty areas? Finally, share a memorable example that illustrates your ability to adapt. "I was a homemaker for many years. I come into the workforce with many years of the practical world experience. However, I also have strong educational credentials. I believe my success with your agency will come from having the hard skills that you are looking for, whether learned in school or through work experience. I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate. I’ve read over the Grant Monitoring Policies and Procedure Manual. The objectives are: Verify that grant sub-award funds are being spent to further the grant objectives. Verify the subrecipient has internal controls. Verify expenditures are supported with documentation. There are similarities to what I did as a legal analyst, in that I reviewed financial records of businesses that failed to pay sales and uses taxes to the State. I investigated to determine if money was misappropriated for personal use. After the investigation, I wrote a recommendation report that I submitted to the Agency Board for their final review and determination. The report contained a statement of the facts, the violation, the rule of law, the analysis of the facts to the law, a conclusion, and a recommendation to further investigate or not further the investigation."

      Rachelle's Answer

I would work on making this more concise; however, bits are really good. I have reworded for clarity and flow. Avoid leading with homemaker experience unless you strongly tie in the transferable skills as well.

"I have strong educational credentials that compliment the skills I have learned through work experience. I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate degree. I am more prepared than most candidates as I’ve read through the Grant Monitoring Policies and Procedure Manual, and understand the objectives, and requirements. These are just a few of the responsibilities in which I am already well versed."
