"Since there is a significant shortage of physicians in rural areas, students receiving federal assistance should do their part by practicing in these areas for a certain amount of time. This practice should occur in full transparency, however. For instance, the loan must be offered and accepted with the understanding that the recipient would work with underserved communities upon graduating. That said, there should be exceptions for rare specializations or medical students with highly unique or in-demand skills."
