Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is a school dedicated to social responsibility. The TouroCOM admissions team wants to know that you embrace the importance of social responsibility. Show that you are willing to be generous with your time and expertise by embracing opportunities to give back to others.
As a physician, your medical knowledge will be greatly needed and appreciated by your community. Some ways that a physician can help their community include:
- Teaching your community about available health resources
- Offering free or reduced-fee services to families who need it
- Holding free workshops on topics such as sexual health, mental health, or addiction
- Volunteering regularly and being an advocate for community involvement
On its website, TouroCOM states, 'Since opening our doors in 2007, the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine has been attracting students and training physicians who are committed to helping their patients and the medical profession. TouroCOM is equally committed to working to correct diversity disparities in our health care delivery system, so physicians can best meet patient needs.' When responding, be sure to keep TouroCOM's mission and values in mind.

"Giving back to my community will be a significant part of my efforts as a medical professional. I already spend a great deal of my time volunteering at Children's Hospital ABC, and I plan to continue my volunteer work long after I've completed medical school. One specific way I want to help my community is by holding free workshops every month. Each workshop will address a tough issue that my community might be facing, such as alcohol abuse, depression, or mental illness. I appreciate that TouroCOM places significant emphasis on being partners in the community. I was encouraged to discover that TouroCOM partners with hospital affiliates that target underserved communities in rural and urban areas. I am eager to become an active contributor to these efforts."
