1. Can you think of a time you had a disagreement with a boss or coworker, and if so, how was it resolved?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Any time you work with someone else, there is a chance you will disagree on something at one time or another. The interviewer knows this. It's human nature for people to have their own opinions. What is important to the interviewer is whether or not you are willing to compromise and work through difficult situations with your coworkers. Being unwilling to compromise or find alternative solutions to a dispute can affect everyone on the team, even if it is indirectly. Sharing a personal experience is okay, but do not embellish it to 'be the hero.'
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Focus on showing the interviewer you have excellent conflict resolution and communication skills. Let them know that you handle conflict maturely, professionally, and compassionately.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"Over the years, I have found the involved parties can fix all conflicts with honest, open communication. When both parties can explain why they are bothered by something and decide how to handle the situation maturely, it seems less conflict will happen in the future. Most conflicts are simply a misunderstanding or lack of communication."

2. Contract Research Organizations such as PPD employ people from many different backgrounds with a variety of skills. Have you ever worked with a very diverse group of people?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Diversity among peers and clients should be expected when working for a CRO. Some people are intimidated when faced with learning new cultures and beliefs, but in the healthcare industry, diversity is crucial to providing effective care. The interviewer wants to know that you are open to meeting and learning about new people and becoming an integral part of the team. Be positive in your response.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Give an example of a time you worked with a diverse group. Explain that you enjoy the experience of learning about new cultures and their beliefs.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I think diversity in the healthcare industry is essential. People from all over the world now call our country their home. I believe learning about and showing an appreciation for people from different walks of life only makes us stronger as we build upon the common bond of caring for others."

3. What is something that causes you stress at work, and how do you overcome it?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Stress is inevitable no matter what profession one chooses. It's how we deal with it that makes a difference. The interviewer, therefore, is not looking for you to say that nothing stresses you but rather to show that you can control stress and work through it.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Explain what causes you stress, then focus on ending on a positive note with how you overcome work stressors. The interviewer does not want to hear you dwell on the stressful events in the workplace but rather how you problem-solve and work through them.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I think we all experience stress in different ways. One of the most work-related stressors for me is not being able to give everyone the results that they want in a clinical trial. Although it is frustrating, I am also mature enough to know that we can try again tomorrow if we don't succeed today."

4. Can you work independently, or do you prefer to be closely supervised?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
PPD is looking for a Clinical Trial Coordinator who is a self-starter and can work independently. While working in a team environment is also required as you collaborate with coworkers, sponsors, and participants, PPD seeks a Clinical Trial Coordinator who can conduct independent research, examine the data, and make decisions. The interviewer asks this question to see that you can work independently and do not need to be closely supervised if hired.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022

Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022

5. How well do you work under pressure?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
As a Clinical Trial Coordinator, you must work well under pressure. You will be responsible for creating and staying within budget, managing a team, overseeing sites, and meeting critical deadlines. You will face situations that add stress to a project, and you must be able to manage your stress for a successful outcome. The interviewer wants to hear that you work well under pressure and stay focused on the task at hand.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Give an example of working under pressure related to your role as Clinical Trial Coordinator. You might have had a trial that was in danger of going over budget or missing a deadline because of unforeseen circumstances. Using the STAR method is an excellent way to formulate your response to this question. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Briefly describe the situation, explain your role, the measures you took to solve the issues, and the outcome. The interviewer wants to hear that you can effectively work under pressure as a Clinical Trial Coordinator.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I work very well under pressure. I can remain calm and professional when faced with stressful situations. I find the best thing to do when there is a lot of pressure at work is to stay organized. I create a list, prioritize the most urgent assignments, and delegate work where I can. Work stressors do not affect me if I stay focused and know exactly what needs to be done."

7. This concludes our interview. What questions do you have for me?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to make sure that all of your questions about the company or job role are answered during the interview. It is best to ask at least a question or two, showing the interviewer your eagerness to learn all you can. Review the job announcement and research the company beforehand so you do not ask questions that could be answered during your research.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Focus on asking questions specific to the role you are interviewing for or the company culture and work environment. Examples of good questions are asking the interviewer how you performed in the interview or if you need to clarify anything, asking what the interviewer likes most about working for the company, or if they have any hesitancy about hiring you.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example

8. While PPD likes to employ people who have plans to work for us long-term, it is understandable if those plans change. Do you anticipate any significant changes in your life within the next 3-5 years?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
One of the good things about working for a CRO like PPD is that there are usually several projects for different sponsors being conducted simultaneously. Knowing your goals and any changes you anticipate in your life will allow the interviewer to evaluate two things - what positions are available that won't disrupt your plans and if you are interested in having a long-term relationship with the company.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
If you anticipate a move or other significant change with a CRO, you may still be offered employment but within a project that fits your time frame. Either way, being honest with the interviewer will benefit both you and PPD.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"My spouse is in the military, and although I would like to say with certainty that I will be living in the same place three years from now, there is no guarantee. I am glad you asked this question because I wanted to discuss any opportunities within PPD where I could be useful but may not be obligated for several years until we know if he will be able to stay in one place."

9. We require all candidates to submit to a pre-employment drug screen. Will there be an issue passing the drug screen?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer advises you of their pre-employment drug screen and asks if you'll pass, so they can decide if they want to continue with you in the hiring process. PPD invests a lot of money in hiring employees, and they want to avoid sending you for a drug test if you will not pass.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
As with any interview question, focus on being completely honest in your response. As embarrassing as it may be, if you do not think you will pass the drug test, you need to let the interviewer know that now. If passing the drug test will not be an issue, ensure the interviewer that you will pass the test because you do not use drugs.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"There will not be an issue passing the drug screen as I do not take illicit or prescription drugs."

10. With regard to salary, PPD tries to be fair to all employees. However, salary is often commensurate with experience. What are your thoughts regarding someone working the same job as you being paid a higher rate due to their experience level?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Most employers offer higher salary incentives to get more seasoned employees. This is not meant to devalue a person's knowledge or experience but instead pay for more experience. It is important to note that the interviewer is not saying you will make less than someone with more experience, but it is possible. This question is often asked to see how you respond and how badly you want the position.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
If an employee is willing to put in the work and earn the pay increase, employers often see them as someone worth investing in. Now is an excellent time to ask what the beginning salary is and discuss negotiable options such as benefits and paid time off.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I understand that years of experience are often rewarded with higher earnings. I feel that, given a chance to demonstrate my knowledge and skills, you will find that I am capable of doing the job as well as some of the more experienced employees. Having said that, I will not turn down an offer of employment because of a difference in pay based on my present lack of experience. With that in mind, what benefits are available for someone coming on board with your company with my resume?"

11. PPD tries to accommodate employees with regard to scheduling preferences as much as possible. Is there a particular schedule that would be a better fit with your personal/family responsibilities?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Many people work more than one job or have a one-parent home, which requires a flexible schedule. Others simply prefer to work one shift over another. Being upfront with the interviewer about your scheduling preferences could prevent conflict later on. It is easier to plan a schedule you can agree on than to fix problems that arise due to a fear of being rejected. Be honest and direct.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
While it is good to explain the schedule that would work best for you, it is also a great idea to show the interviewer you are flexible in your schedule. If you cannot be flexible, explain what outside obligation keeps you from working any shift the company gives you.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I am a single dad with two school-aged children. Ideally, the day shift would be a better fit for me. This schedule would allow me to fulfill my work and home responsibilities without conflict. However, my sister helps out when needed, so I could work any schedule you give me."

If you gave notice, they want to understand what you did not like about your job to see if you would fit in with the company culture.
Written by Krista Wenz on May 18th, 2022

Answer Example
"I would have to say that one of the things I'd like to improve about myself and that most people recognize about me is I always want to be the 'fixer.' While I know that this is not always a negative thing, I have often let the fact that I couldn't fix a certain situation trouble me. On a lighter note, I believe I have a positive, outgoing personality. I enjoy getting to know others and like to make them feel comfortable."
