"I'd say my greatest weakness is I can be hard on myself whenever I make a mistake. My supervisors have commented that they rarely need to reprimand me, as I am already too hard on myself. I'll bend over backward to right any mistake I've made. This used to be so extreme, that some supervisors were reluctant to even let me know about any mistakes I made. I've since improved. On the rare occasion, something is brought to my attention, I simply listen, ask what I can do to make it right, and end any such discussion with a commitment to do everything in my power to make sure it won't happen again."

This question helps the interviewer assess your level of self-awareness and whether you're open and honest about your shortcomings. It will also help them gauge if you allow your shortcomings to control you or if you actively pursue self-growth and whether you identify your weaknesses as growth opportunities.

Frame your greatest weakness as an asset in its own right. Being a perfectionist can be a weakness. Similarly, this quality can be seen as a benefit to a company. Think about self-assessments you may have done prior to previous performance reviews and see if any of those growth opportunities can be applied.
