"I have been passionate about human rights and advocacy since my first year of college when I had the opportunity to attend the Women's March in Washington, DC. Seeing how so many people gathered to support the cause of reproductive rights could highlight the issue in our public awareness and change the conversation inspired me to pursue the path of fighting for human rights in areas where those rights are being exploited. I was so excited to discover the good work Human Rights Watch does globally to document human rights abuses and advocate for reform."

"Although I have never been employed at an organization specifically focused on human rights issues, I did study political science during my undergraduate years. Through my studies, I became fascinated and disturbed by the cross-section between politics and human rights. My interest led me to volunteer the past three years with a digital archive tracking legislative decisions in areas around the world where human rights abuses are most prevalent. Since then, I eagerly read all material I can on the subject and stay up-to-date with global current events"

Even though you may personally be passionate about human rights, you may have never worked for an organization devoted to this cause. Avoid forcing an answer to fit what you believe the interviewer wants to hear. Instead, speak sincerely and explain how your passion materialized. Maybe you have read a lot of material on the subject. Maybe you have volunteered with an organization that addresses similar issues. You will be more confident if you speak honestly about your path to this passion.
