For your safety, proper PPE is required on the job when inspecting anything that presents a hazard to your health. Employers can be held liable if their employees do not wear the PPE that is provided to them. An employer will not want to hire someone that they feel would be a liability. You need to explain why PPE is important and why you will wear it when appropriate.

"I feel it is imperative to wear the proper PPE when indicated. I certainly do not want to endanger my life or those around me by not wearing the proper equipment. Whenever I am in a situation that can present a hazard to my health, I don the necessary protective equipment."

I feel wearing the proper PPE is part of the job. I feel it is no different from having the right boots for inspections of WUI properties or having the proper SPF on those sunny days. My employer does not want me to take unnecessary risks. It is my job when I show up to an inspection to be mentally, and physically prepared, having the proper personal protection equipment is part of the job.

This is a strong start that you can build on. PPE is definitely part of being prepared for any job in the fire service. You can enhance this answer further by explaining that wearing appropriate PPE is important to maintaining your safety and the safety of your team on the job. Failing to wear the correct PPE can result in injury or an inability to perform your duties, which can put members of the public at risk.
