Detectives should possess strong leadership qualities because they are responsible for managing a team of investigators and coordinating efforts to solve complex cases. A good detective is able to inspire and motivate their team, set clear goals and expectations, and effectively communicate with colleagues and superiors. They must also be able to make difficult decisions and handle high-pressure situations with calm composure. Ultimately, strong leadership qualities are essential for detectives to effectively serve and protect their communities.
The interviewer wants to hear if you are a natural leader and enjoy taking on a leadership role and being a mentor. Talk to the interviewer about your capabilities and interest in working in a leadership position. This is also a great time to mention any paid or volunteer leadership roles you have taken on.
"Leadership is an essential part of being a strong team member in the force. I really enjoyed taking on a leadership role in my previous position as the lead detective in the special crimes unit and offering help and advice to those who needed it. When I am not working, I also volunteer with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, where I have mentored and led young and troubled youth for the past six years. I find a lot of enjoyment helping steer kids onto the right path and helping them achieve their dreams."
