The answer to this question should demonstrate a desire to make all patients feel comfortable. Share key ways that you aim to relieve dental anxiety in children and adults. The employer wants to know that you will provide a positive experience for patients, regardless of their anxiety level, that will make them want to return in the future.
"I will take my time with patients who are scared or uncomfortable. I listen if they have had a previous poor experience. I will also detail what the patient can expect if the general concern is unknown. I also validate patients and admire their bravery, especially if they have a previous diagnosis and were faithful to follow through with treatment."
"I have found that most patients are anxious when they don't know what to expect. I will review the diagnosis and treatment plan with the patient, and explain why the visit is necessary and the procedure will result in a positive outcome."
"I try to develop rapport with anxious patients by identifying a common interest. Having a conversation about another topic can be a distraction tool, and patients will forget about their anxiety and feel more calm and at rest."

I always make sure patients feel safe by introducing myself by name and title and explaining to the patient that everything will be done at their own pace. If they need to stop or take any breaks or need a bit more explained to them about the treatment, I'm willing and happy to do so. I don't want them ever to feel discriminated for being nervous about the dentist, and I will make this very clear to them that I'm willing to take all the time and reassurance they need to feel more relaxed and comfortable.
