The recommendation data analysts provide to decision-makers is only as good as the quality of data they are analyzing. If the data is inconsistent, the conclusions drawn from its analysis could contain errors and be misleading. Interviewers want to ensure that you are aware of this and have processes to clean and sanitize the datasets you are working with. This ensures that your analysis will produce valid recommendations decision-makers can use confidently.

"I use several techniques to identify and correct inconsistencies in my data sets. I prefer the central semantic storage approach to prevent data inconsistencies. This helps create a central area for the data that can be used as a reference when processing the complete data set. If an inconsistency still occurs, I typically use a primary key to link to a table so can re-enter the correct data. This approach has worked well for me in my previous positions."
