Before your interview, fully verse yourself on the latest standards, procedures, and regulatory changes in the dental industry due to viral concerns. Because COVID-19 is transmissible through respiratory droplets, the risk of viral exposure is elevated among dentists, putting them at risk. Patients are the primary source of infection for dentists.
Mask wearing for patients is not a viable option since their mouth needs to be open for their procedures, putting dentists at direct risk of close exposure. The rules and procedures for dentists to wear protective gear only make performing their job more difficult. Additional steps for disinfection and higher standards for changing tools add significant time to each appointment, leaving less room for the number of patients to be treated in a day. All of these equates to a lower number of patients and higher expenses while generating significantly less income.

"COVID-19 and other pandemics have left a significant impact on the dentistry profession, including how we treat patients, the increased demand for clean air technology in dental offices, the increased demand and risk put on support staff, and PPE supply and demand. One significant impact that has interested me most is how we will triage patients, ranking their needs from elective care to urgent care to emergency care. For instance, during the COVID-19 quarantine time, when most dentists shut down and stopped offering regular cleanings and general care, many practices were forced to determine better what qualified a patient for acute care. I look forward to learning about the long-term impact as I dive deeper into the dentistry profession."
