When answering questions of a sensitive nature, stick to the facts and present both sides for the sake of transparent impartiality. Alternative medicine can be a controversial subject. In pharmacy, you'll need to be fully versed in the complexities of drug interactions. However, because dietary supplements are classified as foods and not regulated nearly as strictly as prescription drugs regarding efficacy and safety testing or marketing claims, you'll also need to be educated on these. Whether you are a proponent or opponent of supplements and alternative medicine, as a pharmacist, you'll need to ensure the safety of your patients. So share your knowledge of the complexities of such issues and your understanding of how they can impact the care you provide.

"Although I am a supporter of traditional medicine, I understand that alternative medicine can offer benefits for some. I agree that there is a science behind alternative medicine; however, alternative medicine should be more strictly regulated. People need to educate themselves better before jumping into 'all-natural' therapy. Prescribed teas and herbs can be dangerous if taken in the wrong dosages. Even though it is natural, your body may not react well to it. As with all types of medicine and practices, research and education are critical."
