They want to hear what avenues of research you employed (online, telephone, or in-person interviews with faculty and alumni, visiting the campus, scheduling meetings with career counselors, or having a chat with your local dentist).
Blindly sending out batch applications would reveal putting little thought into your approach and performing at the bare-minimum. Instead, go into depth with your process and how it has worked. That will offer them insights into your approach to your work.
