"One challenge I have been learning about is how cyber-security is lacking when protecting the new technology the medical industry has adapted. A lot of new healthcare technology now requires an internet connection, with results in potential issues around hacking and cyber-attacks. For example, the United States government issued a warning a few years ago that hackers would even be able to instruct infusion pumps to deliver lethal medication doses. If malicious programmers can infiltrate medical devices and hurt patients, steal research, or leak clinical trial data, this is a serious issue to be addressed immediately. To start, the medical industry needs to quickly adopt cyber protection acts similar to those that financial institutions adopt. These developments in health tech are amazing and often life-saving; however, organizations are now incurring added expenses to implement precautions against hacking. According to an IBM report, the average cost of healthcare data breaches rose to 7.1M in 2020. The FDA had some strong suggestions, such as encouraging manufacturers to limit equipment access to trusted users. Other IT experts suggest that medical organizations structure their proprietary networks with much more care."
