When a medical student receives federal assistance through certain government grants, they are required to spend at least three years in practice in a medically underserved area. Some medical students may see it as an unfair advantage for them to have the first pick of where they practice after completing their medical training, but it is a reality. On the other hand, some people don't care, so long as the best talent is put to good use. Your interviewers at Georgetown University want to ensure that you understand the need for these programs and why they are in place.

"I believe that, because there is such a huge shortage of physicians in rural areas, students receiving federal assistance should do their part by practicing in these areas for a certain amount of time. I understand this may seem unfair; however, there could be exceptions for certain rarer specialties that don't practice in these underserved areas."

Ryan Brunner has over ten years of experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring candidates in the healthcare, public service, and private manufacturing/distribution industries.
You can share your thoughts on this with the interviewers, but you want to remain positive and show that you understand these programs are in place to get physicians in medically underserved areas of the country. Before your interview with Georgetown University's medical school, research the types of programs available in this arena so you can talk about them as you answer.
