Columbia University College of Dental Medicine students are encouraged to expand their experiences by incorporating acts of service as part of their academic studies. Some of the volunteer opportunities available to dentistry students include:
- Community DentCare Network: This network includes six school-based clinics, and a Mobile Dental Center linked to five community-based practices.
- Eldersmile Program: The program offers prevention, education, screening, and treatment services for seniors through mobile van visits to senior centers.
- Give Kids a Smile Day: Sponsored by the American Dental Association, this national event promotes oral health awareness and treatment to children in underserved areas.
- CHHMP Dental: Also known as the Dr. Michael Yuan Student Run Dental Free Clinic, this is a student-run free clinic that provides free dental care to the homeless, uninsured, and undocumented people of Harlem.
The College of Dental Medicine states on its website that it is "deeply committed to improving the oral health of its community and the world at large. Locally, we are the major provider of much-needed oral health care services to the underserved populations of Harlem, Inwood, and Washington Heights through our clinics and a variety of free services and programs which all provide key learning opportunities for our students."

"Before applying to Columbia University, I researched the College of Dental Medicine and its community outreach efforts. I was glad to learn that dentistry students are encouraged to expand their experiences by incorporating acts of service as part of their academic studies. I have avidly volunteered for years and feel encouraged to know that there will be ample opportunities for me to continue serving my community when I relocate for my studies. The primary volunteer initiatives I am aware of include the Community DentCare Network, the Eldersmile Program, and the student-run free dental clinic. It would be an honor to participate in all of these initiatives; however, if time is limited, I would be most interested in participating in the Eldersmile Program. I have a heart for the elderly and would appreciate the chance to provide care and critical screening for this high-risk population."
