Columbia University College of Dental Medicine is well-known for its long and rich history in dental education and research. In fact, one of the pioneers in the dental profession, Dr. Gies, is also the founder of the College of Dental Medicine. Columbia has a legacy of promoting cutting-edge research. The University states on its website, "As we take dentistry into new and exciting directions, we advance the College's century-old commitment to strengthening the profession and its practice through research and scholarly activity."
Columbia's College of Dental Medicine faculty engages in wide-ranging areas of research, including:
- Oropharyngeal Cancer
- Biomaterials/Regenerative Biology/Stem Cells
- Neuroscience and Pain
- Microbial Pathogenesis/Microbiome
- Behavioral and Social Sciences/Population Oral Health
- Systemic and Oral Disease Interactions....and more.
Discuss with the Admissions Committee which area of research is most interesting to you at this time, and explain why. Be sure your answer remains open and shows the admissions interviewers that you have broad interests and an enthusiasm to learn about other research areas.

"I have a strong interest in Regenerative Biology. As an aspiring Periodontist, I am beyond excited to have the opportunity to learn more about regenerative dentistry in periodontics. It fascinates me that damaged tissue can restore itself, and I am eager to learn more about the application of tissue science and tissue engineering. If I could choose to focus on a research topic of my choice, it would be regenerative dentistry and the regeneration of oral and dental tissues. It would be an honor to attend Columbia University College of Dental Medicine because of the school's long-standing history in dental education and research."
