      Hobby Lobby's products are all about bringing joy and beauty into the world, and our employees are advocates for a peaceful, joyful atmosphere. Talk to the interviewer about any times you've had to work with an upset customer. How did you help turn the interaction into a positive experience for the customer?

      "Every customer who comes into a store brings emotional baggage with them, whether good or bad. I think part of my job as a customer service associate, and as a human, is to bring a little joy into someone's day. Kindness is the top priority; even if the customer is in the wrong or working from incorrect or skewed information, I would make sure that their feelings were acknowledged and appreciated, and then I would work with them to find a solution to their problem that aligned with company values."

      "For example: "When I first started out working in retail, I learned really quickly how important it is to know how to de-escalate a confrontation with a customer who is upset, frustrated, rude, or angry. In my experience, the most important thing to do is acknowledge that the frustration is valid and listen very closely to everything the customer says. I usually repeat back the problem as I understand it after the customer has had their say so that they know I was listening."

      "I love the displays here -- they're always fun, imaginative, and inspiring! I particularly liked the Star Wars display you had in your downtown location a few months ago when the newest film came out. It was so cute! I would love to be a part of creating a display like that."

      "I have a strong creative flair and enjoy creating attractive displays. I think I have enough experience in retail to understand what attracts a customer and what prompts them to purchase.       "I love my community, and I make shopping decisions based on my knowledge of a company's commitment to the community. What I love about Hobby Lobby, and one of the reasons I think it's so successful, is that it's still privately-owned and operated -- which means that each store truly is invested in its own community while the company at large remains committed to the same organizations and ministries it's been donating to for years. To me, that shows stability and character, which are things that I and a lot of other consumers look for when making decisions about where to shop."

      "I've been a Hobby Lobby shopper for years, and I'm consistently amazed at how they manage to keep their prices so low. The fact that they treat their customers with enough respect to bring them great value and the lowest prices creates trust in customers, so they're more likely to return to the store for any craft-related needs. It's not just about the low prices; it's about the integrity and generosity they openly display as a business. It's a store that people want to shop at because they trust the actions and values of the company."

    Do you have reliable transportation?

      "I take public transit; however, I find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm which stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

      "I can be productive in most work environments, so long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

      "Rather than focusing on the negative, try spinning your answer into a positive focus: "I do best in a supportive environment where there is room to grow, the ability to ask questions, and healthy co-worker relationships."

Some of the best customer service experiences I've had as a shopper are times I don't feel like I'm 'receiving customer service' -- it's when I feel like I'm making a genuine connection with someone based on shared interests. My philosophy of customer service is being hospitable when customers enter the store, engage them in conversation about the hobbies they're passionate about, and make sure I'm available with any questions they have."

      "I ensure that my customers' needs are met by actively listening to them and also asking the right questions. Treat others as you want to be treated. It's a good rule to live by."

      "Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online review. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If I were unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

      "I have some dispute resolution training from my previous retail position and fully believe that flexibility needs to be offered in extreme situations."

      While Hobby Lobby is known as primarily an arts-and-crafts retailer, we're so much more than that: we provide custom framing, sell tools for jewelry-making, have a huge variety of fabrics and home accents, and carry all the holiday merchandise our customers could ever need. Every November, my kids and I come in to look for this year's set of Thanksgiving decorations -- they're so excited about this yearly family trip, and I love that they get to pick have a hand in getting our home ready for all of the holiday traffic at our house."

      "You name the hobby, I've probably bought supplies for it! I really love scrapbooking, and I've been dabbling recently in jewelry-making. I'm actually really excited about the possibility of working here so I can pick my coworker's brains about a lot of different crafts! And I'd be really excited to talk to customers about their hobbies, as well."

I'm a spiritual person myself, so I'm excited about the chance to work for a company whose values are similar to my own and really guide the leadership of the company in every decision they make."

      "Though I'm not a spiritual person, I'm familiar with the 'Biblical principles' that Hobby Lobby frequently references on their website. I think my own personal values of patience, kindness, and gratitude fall right in line with what Hobby Lobby values in an employee. My values guide my interactions with customers; I think patience and kindness are foundational values in customer service."
