How do you develop relationships with athletes?
A strong reporter is able to create contacts who help them find story ideas. Sports reporters create contacts with athletes, coaches, and those inside the organization who will update them with the latest news from the team or department. The candidate should discuss their experience generating sources in sports or in other fields, and talk about how their ability to create strong relationships will strengthen the sports department.
"Once I do a story with an athlete or a coach, I make sure to swap business cards with them. Although I may not think I will need them again, it is always good for someone else to have my phone number, in case they ever want to reach out. In this way, I am able to collect phone numbers and contacts to use years in the future."
