"I have a variety of hobbies that kept me busy outside of school hours during medical school and residency training. I currently volunteer at the local children's hospital where I read books and play games with kids who can't get out of bed. I also play in indoor and outdoor volleyball leagues and like to read fiction. One of my favorite authors is Dean Koontz! During fellowship training, staying active outside of training will be a priority so I can stay healthy in both body and mind."

Ryan Brunner has over ten years of experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring candidates in the healthcare, public service, and private manufacturing/distribution industries.

As you answer, discuss how these activities will be important in your life as a fellow in their program to keep you happy, healthy, and refreshed during your training. Keep in mind that this question will also allow some insight into who you are as a person and how you will mesh with the faculty and other trainees in this fellowship program. This question often leads to organic conversation and connection, so don't be afraid to share!

I have a variety of hobbies that kept me busy outside of medical school and residency training. I enjoy working out and playing soccer with my colleagues. I love to explore attractions such as museums. I also enjoy traveling, whether it is to a different state or country, and exploring other cultures. During the fellowship, staying active outside of training will be a priority so I can stay healthy in both body and mind. Exploring the website, I noticed that you have a gym for your employees. That is attractive to me not only because I can work out there but also because I’ll be able to meet other employees in the gym and get to know them on a more casual basis.
Marcie's Feedback
Great! You come across as well-rounded and active, which any interviewer will appreciate. It also sounds like you have a good work/life balance. Mentioning the gym is also a nice touch because it shows that you've done your research and are knowledgeable about everything the fellowship has to offer. Nice answer!

It changes from when you are single, married, and then have kids. I enjoy going out for a walk/run with my dog and my 13-year-old daughter who loves to go outside. I also play soccer mostly with my boy who is 14 now and I even coached him for a little bit but I think I am too soft on him than his current coach. We love to travel but mostly I do my fun travel activities in the location where I do my medical missions/internal rotation. During Uganda, we went to Jinja and saw the White Nile (not the Blue Nile in Ethiopia) and did rafting which was a fun activity.

These are great hobbies and interests to share with the interviewer, allowing them to get to know you better! You did a nice job keeping it brief and ideal in length.
