I speak in simple terms since medical terminology can confuse people outside the industry. After relaying the information, I ask if they have any questions or need clarification. I take the time to ensure they completely understand, and if they do not, I figure out another way to deliver the information."

When I do have to give challenging news or information to my patients or their family I make sure I choose an appropriate time and place. Firstly I prepare what exactly I plan to say, and make sure I’m the right person to give this information. I will gather all the information I need and try to use the simplest terms possible that do not alternate the quality of the news I’m giving. I will make sure they are in a comfortable position and quiet environment and then I relay my news to them explaining to them as much as possible the situation they are in, and how and why that is the case. I’ll make sure to leave room for questions so they can better understand the information. I will console them and ask them to freely approach me for any help whatsoever they might need concerning this information and give them room to absorb what they’ve heard.
