This is a classic interview question. It gets asked, in varying ways, because the answer matters. One thing it tells the interviewer is whether or not you have a realistic view of the company he represents. Do you want to be the CEO? That's not going to happen in 5-10 years unless you start your own company. Maybe you don't see yourself working for this company for more than 5 years, anyway. Try to pick an answer that blends honesty and reality with a bit of salesmanship.

"My ultimate goal is to have a role in top management where my decisions can affect strategic decisions about product development. But I know that I first must lay a good technical foundation and develop a good understanding of not just product development, but also marketing, sales, and supplier relations, in order to have a chance to reach that career objective. After five years, I should have a good technical foundation in the company's products, and I would like to have a chance to move around to some of those different roles, to get the experience I need. In ten years, I would like to be managing a small to medium-sized group, demonstrating that I have what it takes to keep moving up the ladder. I know those are big goals for a recent college graduate, but high management is my long-term goal. I also realize that there are a lot of steps between where I am right now and that ultimate target."
