What is plateletpheresis?
"Plateletpheresis (also called thrombocytapheresis or thrombapheresis) is the process of collecting thrombocytes, more commonly called platelets, which is the component of blood involved in blood clotting. A donor's body will usually replace the donated platelets within 72 hours."
Separation of blood components for storage and later use by a recipient is performed a number of ways. Understanding the different types of separation techniques and what to do with those specimens after collection is an important part of a blood bank laboratory tech's job.
