"My children go to this school, and I plan to live in this neighborhood for many years to come. Being my local school is just one factor that will keep me here long-term; however. Assure the interviewer that this position would not be a temporary fix but a longer-term career move. Employers do not expect you to stay with them forever, but they do like to hear there is at least a 5-year plan where you can see yourself growing. Do not offer a timeframe but offer up information as to why this may be a long-term fit.
Here are some factors that could determine a long-term fit:
- Unbeatable workplace culture and a positive environment
- Continual challenges and opportunities to learn
- Cross-departmental training and opportunities to diversify your role
- A team environment that feels like family
- Competitive compensation packages including health benefits and vacation days
- Strong career trajectory and history of promotion among top performers
- Genuine and integrity-driven leadership, ownership, or c-suite

"My long-term plan is to find an organization with a workplace culture that encourages personal and professional development opportunities. I know your company has a solid history of providing these things to your team. For that reason, I could see myself happily growing with your business for the long term."

I applied to your company because you have multiple locations which would have numerous opportunities.

Rachelle's Feedback
This response is vague, sounds disengaged, and would not be a hit with the interviewer. I have added an alternate response, below.
"This position fits in well with my long-term career goals because it provides the luxury sales management piece that I have been missing. I would love to excel in this role and then earn a promotion to a leadership position where I can mentor sales team members on the art of luxury sales."
Anonymous Answer
This position works with my long-term career plans because of the positive culture and workplace environment. I know there will be continual challenges and opportunities to learn. Most importantly, I believe that is a team environment that is going to feel like family and meet the expectations of the University.

Alexandra's Feedback
Your answer has some good parts by referring to the workplace culture you like. However, I recommend that you elaborate more on what your long-term career plan is and how this role specifically fits into that. Is this exactly the role you want to do, or maybe it will prepare you for the role you aim to have in the future?
Anonymous Answer
In a few years, I would like to excel in my role, know my team members to have a better working relationship, and how to be helpful. Then probably within five years, I can earn a promotion to a leadership position where I can mentor my team members on the customer service aspect of the job. I also plan to enroll in a course where I can learn my 2nd foreign language, I chose Spanish because this is the 2nd language spoken in the world. This way I can better help to provide extra service to customers that speak other languages.

Stephanie's Feedback
You have great long-term goals! To improve your response, I suggest being a bit more specific when you mention your long-term plans. Are you hoping to stay with this company?
Anonymous Answer
My long-term plan is to find an organization that can help me to improve myself on the technical and management sides, and I know that your organization has this culture from all the reviews that I found on glassdoor therefore I strongly believe that this position fits my long-term career.

Cindy's Feedback
Good. Your answer demonstrates good research and strives also to demonstrate fit. You can enhance your answer by discussing both how you'll reach those goals in this organization and what position you would ultimately like to occupy.
Anonymous Answer
I previously worked for a company that was mature but had just started hitting its stride and for the next eight years I experienced a tenure of growth and strength and I have the strong sense this company may be entering a similar stretch of success.

Cindy's Feedback
Good! Here, detail is important. Add more information about how you grew, how you helped the company grow, and how you were able to gain professional strength.
