The tricky part about a question like this is that there are programs that require new residency and fellowship graduates to practice in a medically underserved area if they received specific grants for their medical school training. Knowing that either you might be in this boat down the road or that you'll be working closely with student colleagues who are, they want to hear that you understand the importance and use of programs like these in medical training.

"I believe that, because there is such a huge shortage of physicians in rural areas, students receiving federal assistance should do their part by practicing in these areas for a certain amount of time. I understand this may seem unfair; however, there could be exceptions for rarer specialties or medical students with exceptional grades, for example. I fully get the need for programs like these and tip my hat to those that make the commitment."

When a medical student receives federal assistance through loans or grants, some may see it as an unfair advantage for them to have the first pick of where they practice after completing medical school. On the other hand, some people don't care, so long as the best talent is put to good use. You can share your thoughts on this with the interviewers at Drexel University's medical school, but you should remain positive and show your ability to see both sides of the coin.
