How will you navigate working with patients whose religious beliefs hinder them from certain aspects of care?
Every physician will come across at least one patient whose religious beliefs prevent them from taking part in a part of a care plan that they present. This is an ethical and moral dilemma for many physicians. Your interviewers at Nova Southeastern University would like to know if you are ready to face tough decisions while maintaining the integrity and code of ethics expected of you as a physician.
"From what I understand, if the patient is of sound mind and understands the risk they are taking by refusing medical assistance, I do not have the right to override their religious choice. Many factors could change this, such as an unconscious patient, someone under the influence of a narcotic, or a significant language barrier. In these situations, I should refer to my facilities' leaders and ethics community. I would not feel comfortable making a decision like this entirely on my own as a medical student and would rely on the faculty here at Nova Southeastern University to help me through an ethical decision."
You may not be able to answer this question completely correctly as there are many policies and legal requirements that you may not even know about yet as a prospective medical student. Answer to the best of your ability by displaying that you would make the soundest choice possible while maintaining the patient's integrity and wishes. In the end, the patient is the ultimate decision-maker in their care, and you need to be respectful of that.
