"To start with, the first negative impact that a heavily loaded aft has on an aircraft is a nose that pitches extremely upward during flight and this can cause major issues for the pilot like a power-on stall. These problems weigh the most heavily on the pilot during take off, landing and during flight. Because too heavy of a weight in the rear of an aircraft has a negative impact on longitudinal stability, light control forces make the possibility of overstressing an aircraft much greater."

While there are many negative effects of a tail heavy aircraft in flight, this question is allowing your interviewer insight to some of your basic engineering knowledge. "A current colleague of mine really got me into creating my own flight simulation program using MATLAB. What software and coding skills have you developed over your career?

"Throughout my career to this point being six years out of college, I feel very fortunate to have been exposed a wide variety of design and analysis software. I am very fluid in CAD/CAM drawing programs and also am very skilled in Ansys simulation and design software. I am very fluent on just about any software program and if hired for this role, I wouldn't have any issue learning and becoming fluent in any new programs. I have also been trained in C programming at my current job and am confident in my ability with that as well."

Today, Aerospace Engineers will be expected to be fluent in a varying degree of software programs used in design and analysis. Your interviewer will also expect that you have some experience in basic coding langue like Python or C. As you answer and describe all of the programs that you have worked in and feel comfortable operating, be sure to make it clear to your interviewer that you are easily trainable on new software you would be required to use for the role you are interviewing for.

Why is fatigue stress testing so important for aluminum alloys used in the Aerospace industry?

"A reality in the Aerospace industry is that most aluminum alloys we use have been subject to high cycle fatigue testing but the HCF testing just doesn't do a material justice when looking at the stress that an aircraft puts its materials through. In a much better testing scenario, I only trust materials that have been subject to low cycle fatigue testing that utilizes high amplitude, low frequency strains that better test for materials in conditions with changing temperatures and cyclical conditions."

High strength aluminum alloys used in the construction of aircraft have become very common in the industry due to their light weight and overall strength. But, due to the sheer harsh conditions that airplanes and other aircraft are put through, stress testing aluminum alloys for the conditions they will put to use in is very difficult. As you answer this question and explain why fatigue stress testing is important, make sure to go the extra mile to talk about the different kinds of testing that you are familiar with and why those particular tests are important.

How does inclination of an airfoil effect the lift of an aircraft?

"An airfoil is an important component in any aircraft to help the craft takeoff or make elevation changes while in flight. On airplanes, they are most common on the wing section. The basic principle is that as the airfoil is inclined, the airflow coming at the aircraft produces both lift and drag that help the aircraft climb in the air. In theory, the great the inclination means the more lift. But, basic physics principles such as friction can cause air stalls if the inclination is too high on the airfoil. In basic design principles, slower aircraft that generally carry heavier loads utilize thick airfoils that produce a high amount of life and drag. Conversely, high speed aircraft utilize very thin airfoils for lower drag and lower lift."

There are a few parts to this question that your interviewer will expect you to answer with knowledge and expertise. Starting with the airfoil itself, make sure to define what that term means in the aviation world. Then, go on to describe how the inclination of a wing , tail or propeller blade impacts the lift of the aircraft while in flight. To seal the deal on this answer, talk about different airfoil designs and why they are useful for the types of aircraft they are utilized on.

In what situations does it make sense to measure absolute pressure and what situations does it make sense to measure gauge pressure?

"Because gauge pressure measures is directly influenced by changes in atmospheric pressure, it is best used in measurements where a tight seal is not creating a vacuum effect. One of the most common gauge pressure measurements on an aircraft is in the tire pressure because atmospheric pressure has a direct effect on that measurement. On the other hand, absolute pressure measures pressure in a true vacuum situation with a tight seal. This is most often used to measure amounts of fuel in a sealed tank. There are also situations where a differential pressure gauge is used to detect the difference between these two pressures and an airspeed indicator is a very common gauge for this."

At the heart of this question, your interviewer will first be looking to hear that you understand the basic concepts of the differences between measuring absolute pressure and gauge pressure. After you explain the difference, make sure to talk about specific applications of each pressure measurement in Aerospace Engineering and explain why that specific measurement is used in that application.

What techniques do you use to efficiently and effectively manage your time in your work as an Aerospace Engineer?

"As a firm believer in my Outlook calendar and tasks list, I utilize that technology on the go all day long to keep a running tasks list. At the end of each work day, I always carve out 20 minutes or so to update my accomplishments for the day and add new things to my list. I remain focused on the most important items and am always ready for an urgent challenge to get thrown my way. As we both know, this happens frequently in our world. Right now in my current job, I also am tasked with managing some of our largest projects and I hold time on my calendar for project team updates on a weekly basis and I put a strong focus on meeting deadlines that we set as a team."

While your interviewer will likely be able to tell if you can handle the technical aspects of this job by looking at your resume and your education, they'll be looking to hear how you can set yourself apart from others by having you talk about how you manage the busy work life of an Aerospace Engineer. They'll be looking to hear that you have effective project management skills when looking down the road while also having the strong ability to focus on what is urgent versus what is important. Talk about the method that you use to keep yourself organized and on track. While there is no right or wrong way to do this, they'll look to hear that you are confident in your ability to stay on task at all times.

Explain the science behind how a pitot tube works in aviation.

"While pitot tubes have use in many different industries, no industry is more controversial in their use than the aerospace industry. They are a great tool that measures the stagnation pressure as air moves into the tubes. Then as air passes through, a side hole in the tube measures the static pressure. Based on the simple Bernoulli's equation, the tube can then measure the dynamic pressure and be used to calculate the velocity of the aircraft. In more recent years, several major flight crashes have been linked back to malfunctions in the pilot-static system that included a pitot tube and pitot-static instruments for the pilot. I'm very familiar with some of the new pitot tube designs that do a great job of limiting ice formation and have used these in more recent designs."

This poses another question for you to talk about the science behind a very standard piece of aviation equipment, so be sure to explain in detail how a pitot tube measures the static and stagnation pressure to determine the dynamic pressure in the tube and what significance that has in calculating airspeed. On top of explaining how the pitot works to calculate airspeed, be sure to talk about any specific designs you have worked with during your career.

What is fuel weight fraction and how does it impact total fuel consumption when planning flight?

"In the simplest terms, the fuel fraction is a calculation of the weight of the fuel in the aircraft divided by the total take off weight of the aircraft. For most commercial airlines that fly long-haul, a fuel fraction of close to 50% is often needed to ensure that there is enough propellant to make the entire flight path. Other shorter haul planes and military aircraft have much lower fuel fractions and often perform better overall because of the minimized weight."

This question serves as one chance for your interviewer to hear your talk about some very technical knowledge of Aerospace Engineering. While this is terminology that you should know like the back of your hand, it is important that you take the time to explain both how fuel weight fraction is defined and what effect it has on the overall fuel consumption of the aircraft. How do you define the standard lapse rate and what part does moisture play in changes to the rate?

"In my work, I define the standard lapse rate as a 3.5 degree F change in temperature for every 1,000 feet of elevation change in flight. In dryer conditions, that change can be more significant and reach up to a 5 degree change every 1,000 feet. In more moist conditions, the change is less at more around 2 degrees F per 1,000 feet in elevation change. The knowledge of the lapse rates has sure changed flights for pilots as the weather now plays a significant part in creating flight plans and a traditional west coast to east coast flight could have very different path depending on the day and the weather."

For this question, it is vital to know that the lapse rate is defined as the rate at which the temperature changes with an increase in altitude. What your interviewer is looking to hear is that you understand that dry weather conditions produce a lapse rate of 5.5 degrees per 1,000 feet and 2 degrees per 1,000 feet in moist air. Based on those calculations, your interviewer is looking to hear that the standard lapse rate used in calculations of up to 36,000 feet is 3.5 degrees per 1,000 feet. As you answer this question, additionally talk about your knowledge of this rate and how it impacts flight.

How do you stay up to date on the latest technologies in the Aerospace Engineering field?

"As a firm believer in professional development and personal growth as an Aerospace Engineer, I'm happy to say that I belong to the Aerospace Industries Association and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Over the past five years, I have participated in many of the AIAA courses offered online. Recently, I attended a technical writing course that really helped me develop new skills. On top of these organizations, I also subscribe to Science Daily and the NASA website for news in our field."

In a continuously innovative and changing field like Aerospace Engineering, staying on top of the latest trends in new technology is vital to being a successful engineer. For this question, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you take part in some of the professional organizations in the field so be sure to talk about any of them that you belong to. As well, talk about any other publications, conferences or other trainings that you have received during your career and look to continue to participate in moving forward.

What would you say is your least favorite part of being an Aerospace Engineer?

"Up to this point in my career, I would say the least favorable aspect has been the instability of funding at places I have worked. Because of this instability, I've had many close colleagues that were great at their job get let go from their positions simply because the funding for projects wasn't there. While certainly sad to see close colleagues move on in circumstances out of their control, this fact has pushed me to become the best at what I do."

"A canard is a small wing section mounted in front of standard wings on an aircraft and they definitely have their place in air travel. They are most utilized to help provide more stability and lift to certain planes that can benefit from that design. They have also been used in designs to solely aid in stability on aircraft that have been unstable in pitch to help decrease the workload of the pilot in flight."

While certainly newer in the overall design of specific aircraft, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you aware of what a canard is and why they are utilized in aircraft design. When talking about advantages, try to focus your explanation on the aerodynamic flow and how that impacts the flight for aircraft that utilize the design.

What made you interested in a career path in Aerospace Engineering?

"From a very young age, I was always awe inspired by airplanes, helicopters and space shuttles. Some of my earliest memories are putting together complicated airplane models and being obsessed with how they operate. As I grew into my teenage years, both mathematics and the sciences were very strong suits for me and I knew that engineering was a field I would be very successful at. It was this marriage of passion and skill that took me to Texas A&M University to study Aerospace Engineering."

For this question, your interviewer is looking to hear where your roots are grounded and why you chose to put the time and effort into studying and working in the Aerospace industry as an engineer. What is a wet wing and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

"Wet wing is a technique of housing fuel in an aircraft in the wing and this technique is heavily used in large planes to help reduce wing flutter and balance weight on the aircraft. Wet wing is a great design as it eliminates the need for separate bladders or tanks on the aircraft and saves a ton in the overall weight of the plane. From a safety point of view, they are advantageous if a leak were to happen because leaking fuel doesn't discharge to a populated section of the plane. Like any design though, there are some disadvantages to utilizing a wet wing design. First and foremost is the need for every item to be sealed to prevent fuel from leaking around hardware components and the sealant's need to consider expansion from temperature changes."

For this question, it is important that you are aware of the term wet wing and that it refers to an aerospace engineering technique that utilizes an aircraft's wing structure as the sealed fuel tank. But even more important, it is important to know the several advantages of the technique and the few disadvantages of the technique. If you have experience with wet wing design, this is a great question to talk about that direct experience and your thoughts on the design.

What are the three axes of rotation for an aircraft and their corresponding fundamental movement?

"The lateral axis, or pitch, runs across the tips of each wing. This axis is controlled by the elevator on the planes tail and controls the nose up and down positions of the aircraft. The longitudinal axis, or roll, runs from the nose of the aircraft to the tail and is controlled by the ailerons on each wing. Movement of the ailerons causes the craft to roll over in the air. The final axis is the vertical, or yaw, axis. This is controlled by the rudder on the tail and is used to keep the nose and tail of the plan pointing in the same direction."

As a basic question to help open the interview and get you comfortable, your interviewer may throw a question like this your way to help break the ice and for you to gain comfort to start the interview. Don't be taken aback by a basic question on aerospace, rather answer it confidently with ease. For this question, be prepared to talk about the lateral, longitudinal and vertical axes of an aircraft.

What effect causes the "thrumming" noise you hear when a car window is opened on the highway?

"That loud noise is produced by what is known as the Helmholtz Resonance and I'm very familiar with this phenomenon as I have young children that love to play the window opening game in the car. The buffeting effect is caused when gases pass through a single orifice and interact with gas within a container. In the case presented, the container is the vehicle and the orifice is the open window. When the two air masses collide inside the car, a vortex is created that compresses and decompresses and that compression causes the noise."

As an Aerospace Engineer, your interviewer will look to see that you are able to bring basic classroom concepts to real world scenarios and this question presents one of those scenarios. We've all been in the scenario that the question poses when a car is at high speed and a window is cracked open. As the window remains opens, the sound produced can be as loud as a jet or sound like someone pounding a drum in the back seat of the vehicle. "Having been in the working field for the last four years out of college, I feel like I have developed a very well rounded experience level in all things related to the Aerospace Engineering industry. What has brought me here to this interview is my strong desire to be working in the commercial airlines industry, where I really fell in love with this field as a teenager. Three years from now, I'd love to be leading new aircraft design projects that help ensure the safety and well-being of airline passengers for years to come and I truly believe that this opportunity is my chance to do just that."

"Two years ago, I was tasked by the highest leadership at my current organization to spearhead a team that would look at a total redesign of our small passenger airplanes. The main reason for the redesign was to save manufacturing costs and, in turn, help us stay competitive on pricing with other small passenger aircraft manufacturers. While I was definitely confident in my side of the design of the new planes, where I really was challenged was on the materials and sourcing side of the project. As I assembled our team, I had the chance to step out of my comfort zone and work closely with other engineers and buyers on the newly sourced materials we are using on the production of the new planes that started just months ago. Today, I am so thankful for being able to lead this project as it really helped me grow into a more well rounded Aerospace professional."

Through my schooling, I was exposed to all of the different types of turbine engines and feel very comfortable working with any of them when called upon to do so."

"A couple of years ago, I was tasked with being a part of a new prototype design team. During the first team meeting, I learned that I would need to work on a new software design program that I was unfamiliar with. After learning our goals for the project and deadlines to meet, I focused on first using my own research to learn the new program as best as I could before the next meeting. Walking into that meeting feeling fairly confident in my abilities, I let the team know where I was at in my training and asked if there was someone with experience in the program that could help train me on the pieces I was learning last. At that point, an experienced engineer told me he'd be glad to meet with me one day after hours and we did so the next day. After only an extra hour with him, he was impressed with my motivation to learn what I did in such a short period of time and I was thankful for his help as well."

During any engineer's career, they are likely to run into significant roadblocks in their work, whether it is on day to day duties or during a significant project. No matter what situation you talk about as you answer this question, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you are a resourceful person that uses critical thinking to solve problems. "Over the past five years since graduating in the field, I've had the opportunity to oversee several project teams in my current role. Leading those teams has really helped me gain valuable administration experience in coordinating and leading meetings. I have also gained a lot of project management experience and am confident in my ability to set goals, set deadlines and meet all goals and deadlines at the end of the project. Perhaps most importantly, leading these project teams has really helped me gain great interpersonal leadership skills. I have the ability to lead by example and work effectively with any person that I am leading. I also have the ability to step in when things are going well and coach my team members when needed."

Successful Aerospace Engineers are often asked to lead teams in research, innovation and design in their field. "In my current role, I have seen the effects of artificial intelligence firsthand in our use of AI for data collection in testing. This alone has saved an inconceivable amount of man hours and enable our testing to speed up at an exponential rate. As far as the future of AI in the Aerospace Engineering realm goes, I really think the possibilities are almost endless. On the maintenance and efficiency side of things, I think that more AI will develop to monitor aircraft systems more closely and collect information that can detect defective systems and potentially save lives. On the design side, I've already witnessed AI algorithms used in generative design to help make design processes much quicker and I think further advancements are coming here."

AI continues to show huge potential in continuing to change common fields like sales, healthcare and advertising and it continues to bring the ability for great innovation in Aerospace Engineering. "With no two days being exactly the same in my current job, a typical day consists of a couple of standing meetings for projects I am leading or working on and also with our testing team. Prior to the start of each day, typically the evening prior, I plan out my work day around my standing meetings. I always prioritize high need items first. Each week, I try to set aside office time for dedicated time to work on technical reports and handbooks. I set aside this time to be free of distraction so I can work efficiently."

Another huge way that our field benefits society is in the safety of air travel. Commercial air travel will continue to grow year after year and the work our field has done to help make air travel as safe as possible is simply astonoshing."
