How does your family feel about you becoming a pharmacist? Do you have a great deal of support?

"My family is incredibly proud of me for going into pharmacy. My father is especially keen as he graduated from Western University of Health Sciences. My parents and older brother live in the area, so I will have a robust and encouraging support system should I be accepted into Western University of Health Sciences."

The interviewers want to know that if you were accepted into Western University of Health Sciences, you would have the support required for your heavy and challenging pharmacy program workload. Discuss your support system and how your family and friends express their excitement for your career. You can also mention anyone in your family who may have had a similar path in the pharmaceutical industry.

If you do not have the support of your family, do not say that you do. The interviewers will not reject you as a candidate if you do not have your family's support. However, they would like to see that you have someone who supports your goals. Describe who supports you in your life.

How do you respond to feedback and criticism? Describe a situation where your work was criticized. What was your immediate reaction to the situation?

"Last year, I received a low grade on a chemistry project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I could do. It was a compliment and a challenge; all rolled into one! I re-did the assignment with more enthusiasm and passion the second time around. My grade improved significantly, and I thanked my professor for holding me to a higher standard."

The interviewers want to see that you are confident and mature enough to accept feedback and criticism positively, even when it is unsolicited. Not all feedback will be delivered in a friendly, easy-to-absorb manner. Think of a time when you received feedback or criticism that was a bit hurtful or surprising. Discuss how you reacted productively. Tell a story that shows the interviewers how you could take the criticism and learn from it. Talk about how you successfully implemented changes in response to the feedback.

Since you are applying to pharmacy school, using a school example is preferred. However, if you do not have an example from your time in college, you can use an example from a previous job.

"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my grandmother. She always had a smile, no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

Then, return to the question you may have stumbled on and answer how you would have liked to the first time.If you feel the interview went well: 'Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I feel that I was well prepared for the questions you asked and am happy with my performance in this interview.' Then, ask the interviewers if there is anything you can clarify or elaborate on from today's conversation.

When you suffer a setback, how does that emotionally affect you and your work?

"Experiencing a setback is always disappointing and can be very disheartening, especially when involving a project that I have put a lot of time and effort into. I understand that setbacks happen to everyone - despite their level of expertise or years of experience. If I experience a major setback, I will take a few moments to debrief internally, get some fresh air if possible, or discuss what I could have done differently with a mentor. Then, I move on. Rather than dwell on my mistakes, I choose to learn from them."

Everyone handles the stress and disappointment of setbacks differently. When you work in the medical field, those setbacks can be amplified. While attending university, even more so because your grades can greatly determine your future career's success. Discuss with the interviewers how you typically cope with setbacks.

The interviewers want to hear that you do not let setbacks derail you from moving forward. Describe your method for handling setbacks.

What are your thoughts on alternative medicine? Which aspects do you agree and disagree with?

"Although I am a supporter of traditional medicine, I do understand that alternative medicine can offer great benefits for some. I agree that there is a science behind alternative medicine; however, alternative medicine should be more strictly regulated. People need to educate themselves better before jumping into 'all-natural' therapy. Prescribed teas and herbs can be dangerous if taken in the wrong dosages. Even though it is natural, it doesn't mean your body will like it. As with all medicine and practices, research and education are very important."

Alternative medicine can be a controversial subject. Some healthcare professionals love it, some are highly skeptical, and some people's opinions land in the middle.Just like you would answer a sensitive question surrounding politics or religion, it's best to support both sides in some aspect when delivering your response. If you plan to voice a highly one-sided opinion, be prepared to give substantial evidence-based thoughts supporting your viewpoint.

As you are pursuing a career as a pharmacist, your views on alternative medicine may lean away from it. However, you may agree with alternative medicine in some instances. Describe your thoughts, explaining why you agree and disagree with alternative medicine.

Explain your understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of a pharmacist.

"I understand that my day-to-day responsibilities as a pharmacist include filling prescriptions, helping customers understand their dosages, and answering many of the same questions. I know it won't always be glamorous, and it can be physically taxing as there is a lot of standing during the day. With that said, I look forward to coaching my customers on proper drug use and dosages and creating lasting relationships with those in the community where I work."

The interviewers want to know that you have a realistic idea of your career after completing the pharmacy program at Western University of Health Sciences. "I am very much a hands-on learner, so the fact that your school offers many lab-based projects while also encouraging regular work-based experience is a big attraction for me. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to study at Western University of Health Sciences."

"I believe an honorable person will do what is right even when nobody is looking. The pharmaceutical industry deserves only honorable graduates. For that reason, I would tell a superior if I found a classmate cheating."

This honesty-based question is meant to test your character and reveal how you deal with awkward or uncomfortable situations. If you have found yourself in a situation like this, you can draw on that story for your reply. "My ultimate goal would be to open my own pharmacy one day, as I want to provide patients with individual attention and a wider variety of hand-picked products. I also envision myself extending assistance to my community. For instance, I could provide complimentary flu shots for those who do not have insurance coverage. I have an entrepreneurial spirit, so I feel that opening my pharmacy would suit me when I am ready to take that leap."

The interviewer wants to know about your future career plans and if you have intentions of joining an existing pharmacy or buying your own. Be honest about your plans and desire for your career path.

There is no wrong answer to this question. The interviewers simply want to see what your goals are for the future. If you have plans to own a pharmacy, they want to see why business ownership appeals to you.

Are you aware of cases of pharmacy malpractice or pharmacist negligence? How will you cope as a pharmacist if you are faced with one of these situations?

"Yes, I am aware of malpractice cases in the pharmaceutical field, and it can be disheartening to hear these stories. Although I would be diligent with my best work, perfection is not guaranteed, and mistakes happen. If I faced a situation of negligence or wrongdoing, I would take full responsibility for my part in the situation. I would defend my expertise and decision-making skills at the same time. The best thing any medical professional can do is try their best every day, document their actions clearly, and choose to work with colleagues that you trust."

Pharmacy, along with all other medical sectors, can be vulnerable to accusations of malpractice and negligence. The interviewers want to know how you will react if you find yourself involved or aware of malpractice or charge of negligence. They want to see your problem-solving process and if you will start panicking or stay calm and try to figure out a solution for the problem.

Tell the interviewer how you react in problematic situations. Demonstrate your wisdom and problem-solving skills. Try to keep the answer precise and remain positive.

How do you plan to cope with the immense workload and expectations of attending our pharmacy program?

"I have formed a three-pronged plan to tackle the stressors that may arise during my pharmaceutical program. These three approaches will address my academic stress, the emotional strain of adjusting to my new surroundings as I relocate, and the financial strain associated with high tuition. For academic stress, I plan to create a study schedule that I will stick to closely. I will join study groups to help me gain a broader perspective from others, and I have made arrangements for a part-time tutor if needed. For the strain that will result from uprooting myself, I have planned to join a couple of university clubs to get to know other students and make new friends, avoiding feelings of loneliness. I also plan to FaceTime my family every week to prevent myself from feeling homesick. The financial commitment to becoming a pharmacist is a reality that I have come to terms with. I have created a solid financial plan to pay back my loans, and I enlisted a financial advisor to help me create a student budget that I will adhere to closely. I feel well-prepared to cope with and address the immense workload and other expectations ahead of me as a pharmacy school student."

Attending a pharmacy program is a highly involved commitment, and the interviewers want to see evidence that you are ready to handle the expectations ahead. Not only will you be starting pharmacy school, but there is a chance you will be relocating to a new city to attend university. You may also have financial stressors on your mind as you enter this new commitment. Discuss in detail how you plan to remain emotionally grounded as you enter this challenging (yet, rewarding!) time in your life.

Focus on assuring the interviewers that you are aware of the intense workload and are mentally prepared for the challenge. If the interviewers feel that the pharmacy program might be too tough on you, they may pass you over for another candidate.

Walk us through your approach to studying for exams.

"I am a well-organized student and have devised a plan that works well for me. When I prepare for an exam, I will map out the content I need to learn and divide that content over the number of days I have available to prepare. When I create a study calendar, I leave the final three days leading up to the exam to review the entire library of content. I am a big fan of study aids, as I believe they work much better than simply reading and re-reading the materials. Aids such as flashcards are much more helpful to me than highlighting my notes. I also create practice problems and, when possible, will pair up with a fellow student to test each other in written form or verbal lightning rounds. My approach has been successful, as reflected in my overall GPA."

The greater your academic performance, the better the university's metrics will be. For this reason, the interviewers want to choose pharmacy students who will be diligent in their studies and perform well on exams. Perhaps you create your own study aids. Maybe you prefer to prepare for exams in a group setting. Whatever your approach, take the time to walk the interviewers through your process while providing as much detail as possible.

There is no wrong answer to this question since everyone has different study habits. However, if you do not have a solid approach to studying for exams, the interviewers may feel you lack organizational skills.

When you encounter academic difficulty, how do you react?

"When I have encountered academic difficulty in the past, I have recognized the issue early and approached my professor for additional information or study resources. With these resources, I will either increase the time spent reviewing the class material or engage another person to increase my understanding of the topic. For instance, during my biophysical chemistry class this year, I fell behind as we approached the subject of molecular interactions. To ensure my success, I hired a Department of Chemistry tutor. This approach was beneficial, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the subject, which helped my grade a great deal. I will not hesitate to seek outside assistance if I encounter difficulties while attending this pharmacy program."

Every pharmacy student will experience academic challenges - you are not alone when encountering difficulties! The interviewers want to know that you will handle roadblocks with as much emotional intelligence and poise as possible. Why are you choosing to become a pharmacist over other medical professions?

"There are many rewarding professions that I could have pursued within the healthcare industry; however, I specifically chose pharmacy because I have experienced firsthand how the care and attention of a diligent pharmacist can change a person's life. From a young age, I had severe environmental and drug-related allergies. I suffered for years from headaches and ear infections and often reacted to medications prescribed to me. It wasn't until I visited a highly attentive pharmacist that I was told some of my health issues might be due to medication sensitivities. I returned to my family doctor, who referred me to an allergist. Ultimately, these medical professionals put me on the right self-care plan while alleviating many of my long-term symptoms. I already knew that I wanted to work in the medical industry; however, this experience prompted me to look further into the pharmacy profession. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to learn more about medications and help my future clients transform their health through proper prescribing and dosing."

It's a career where I can get to know many of my patients on a closer level since they will visit me regularly for prescription refills. I can educate my patients on proper dosing, which impacts their day, including side-effect management, appetite levels, sleep quality, and even mental clarity. As a pharmacist, I will improve the profession by bringing this whole-health knowledge and mindset to my patients. When my patients feel motivated and empowered to take their entire health into their hands, it will create a trickle-down effect in other aspects of their lives, including their family members' well-being. This ripple will help create greater respect for proper medicating, improve how the public views our profession, and highlight how patients can rely on a pharmacist to help them manage their health."

I was quite interested to hear that the government has agreed to pay $1.95 billion for these additional doses. Of course, the hope is that these additional doses will help us to protect more individuals and end this pandemic more rapidly."

The interviewers want to know that you stay involved with the industry news and topics that impact your future career and interests. Show the interviewers that you rely on reputable sources for your information and remain actively involved in the conversations that affect your future career as a pharmacist. How have COVID-19 and other pandemics of the past impacted the profession of a pharmacist?

"COVID-19 and other pandemics have left a significant impact on the pharmaceutical profession, including how we provide medications to patients, the increased demand for particular meds, the risk put on support staff, and a gap in PPE supply and demand. One significant impact that has interested me most is how we dispense medications, ranking particular meds based on importance. During COVID-19, pharmacists have experienced detrimental drug shortages due to manufacturing and transportation challenges. In the future, I believe pharmacists will have to revisit their distribution model and how they approach collaborating with biotech and pharmaceutical companies. I look forward to learning about the long-term impact as I dive deeper into the pharmaceutical profession."

Many pharma professionals are discussing the 'COVID-ified future' of pharmaceuticals. The interviewers want to see that you stay up-to-date on current events affecting your future profession. There is a lot of information online about the effects of pandemics on different industries. Or, you could visit a pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist about how COVID-19 has affected their work.

If you could meet anyone in the history of medicine, who would you choose and why?

"If I could meet anyone in the history of medicine, I would go back to the very beginning and meet Hippocrates. I find it fascinating that he was the first person ever to believe that disease and death were not a result of the anger of gods. I would ask him what that first conversation sounded like when he first said to others that disease is not caused by superstitious beliefs. He would have had to have faced so many roadblocks, yet, he continued to believe in his work."

This is more of a personal interest question, making it tough to give a wrong answer. Think back to any of the 'founding fathers' (and mothers!) of medicine and choose who has a story that resonates with you the most. It's also a great idea to think of the most burning question you would have for that individual. Be sure to add passion to your answer so the interviewers can sense your genuine interest.

"Should I not be accepted into your pharmacy program the first time, I plan to reapply the following year. I would take the year to upgrade any required courses and prepare an even stronger application. My life's goal is to become a pharmacist, and I certainly won't take one rejection as a final answer."
