"The achievement I am most proud of so far is excelling in my job as an ophthalmic technician. In a fast-paced environment where we treat nearly 40 patients a day (per provider), I thrive and provide my attending physician and the patients with everything they need to deliver quality and competent healthcare."

"One of the ways I got involved in healthcare was by volunteering as a Care extender at UCLA hospital. I rotated in different departments and was able to shadow Drs, RTs, nurses, and the other providers, assist with certain procedures, and spend time with patients, feeding, or simply talking with them and their family members. I asked a couple of the nurses and volunteer staff to be my recommendations for the award application, and I did end up as a finalist and winning the award. Earning the award means a lot to me because it shows that truly an important part of working in medicine is the connection you build with the patients and the other providers. Even as a volunteer, I was able to earn the trust of the patients. I remember one young mother waiting for a liver transplant had her parents visiting, waiting in her room. The patient was unconscious. The parents & I chatted for over an hour, just sharing life stories. They shared about their daughter and her kids, their grandchildren, while I talked about my desire to be a PA and my love of working in medicine, among many other conversation topics. I saw them over a few days, and one of the nurses even mentioned that they were difficult to deal with previously but they had warmed up considerably. Achieving this award really reflected this aspect of medicine that I know will be a large part of what I will implement as a PA, to really connect with my patients and have them feel comfortable and deeply cared for by me and listened to as their provider with their best interests in mind."

"I am excited to learn more about Pace University's PA program. I have two questions prepared for the Admissions Committee today. First, what do you feel are the greatest strengths of this school's PA program? Second, from your perspective, what makes the culture at Pace University better than other schools offering Physician Assistant programs?"

Talk about a time when a professor or co-worker criticized your work.

"I welcome constructive criticism and feedback because it allows me to tailor my approach and become better at my work. (Situation & Task) One day I was criticized by a nurse after she saw me place an IV in the patient's accessory cephalic vein near the elbow. She explained that it isn't convenient for patients in labor because they tend to tense and stop the flow of the IV. (Action) I asked her which areas she felt were best for the IV, and she taught me. Since then, I have avoided the AC veins when placing IVs in labor and delivery patients. (Result) Had I become defensive, I would not have learned a better way. I am committed to receiving critical feedback, which is important to improving and growing as a Physician Assistant."

Feedback will not always come gently. When that happens, we can feel criticized. Then, it's easy for human nature to take over and for us to become defensive. Pace University's PA Program Admissions Committee wants to know that you can accept feedback or criticism with maturity and poise. Think of a time when you received feedback or criticism that was a bit hurtful or surprising. Discuss how you reacted productively. It's important to highlight that you were able to take the criticism and learn from the situation. "Well, I am a very open-minded person. I believe we are always learning and should try to improve ourselves no matter what. So I take feedback and criticism well and usually ask questions about improving myself. I had my work criticized during my time working as a medical assistant in the eye specialize of Westchester and had to perform a test on machines that were new to me. They would give me feedback on guiding my patient on where to look to get the best picture of their eye. I took the feedback pretty well because I believe we can continuously improve."

As a Physician's Assistant you can work in a physicians' offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and more. What type of healthcare setting would you like to work in after graduating from our PA program?

"Right now, working in a private clinic focusing on plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures appeals to me the most. In addition to the advantage in pay, other perks capture my interest, such as the range of transformative procedures and surgeries I could work with. Saying this, I realize that once I have completed the PA program at Pace University, I will have gained exposure to numerous work environments and opportunities, potentially leading me down another path of interest. I look forward to learning more about how I can positively impact others as a PA in a hospital or public care facility."

The Physician Assistant field is rapidly growing, and PAs are considered a vital part of many healthcare teams. PAs can practice under licensed physicians in a broad range of settings. "I would love to work in a primary care setting after graduating from PA school for a few reasons. First, I think it would be a great way to apply all the skills I learned in PA school. I will be exposed to a wide range of conditions. This will help me develop a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and better prepare me for when I want to go into different specialties in the future. I will also be exposed to a diverse patient population as I will see patients of different ages, backgrounds, and health conditions. I'll be able to form long-term patient relationships which is something I am excited to do as a provider. Lastly, I am very passionate about preventative medicine because of the personal experience I have with it. My mom was diagnosed with an advanced stage of uterine cancer after cultural, linguistic, and economic barriers hindered her access to adequate preventative care. This led to a delayed and more advanced diagnosis. Many patients, especially those in underrepresented communities, lack adequate access to healthcare, meaning they are at risk for delayed diagnoses, more advanced conditions, and uncontrolled conditions. I would love to be a primary care provider to these patients to reduce these things."

"I completely agree, and I am constantly seeking to improve myself in all aspects of life. I often listen to speeches and interviews with professionals I admire from the medical community, such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of our country's leading experts on infectious diseases. I also learn a great deal by following the work of Dr. Rochelle Walensky - the current director of the CDC. I also read motivational self-help books to gain insight into overcoming challenges. I aim to emulate these examples of success and greatness as I form my new career as a Physician Assistant."

"Continual development is critical because I believe anyone can better themselves. I want to work on my self-confidence. So I start reading self-help books and remind myself to be kind when something doesn't go the way I want it to go. As a professional such as a PA, I would keep up with my NCCPA continuing medical education CME by doing 50 each year before the deadline and using the NCCPA and AAPA website to see where I can receive the CME credits."

Talk about a personal or professional weakness you will actively improve while attending our PA program.

"I plan to actively improve my written communication skills while attending the PA program at Pace University. At times, I have trouble getting my point across in simple terms. Last semester, I took a course that filled the State-Mandated Writing requirement needed to graduate college. The course already consisted of three essay assignments, but it also required me to write a 1500-word essay. After writing the essay, my professor reviewed the work and allowed me to make revisions for a higher score. I scored 98% on my first essay submission, and my professor told me that I did not need to make any revisions to my essay. I have already made progress on my written communication skills, and I plan to continue this progress by enrolling in a writing workshop over the summer months."

We all have weaknesses, and that is an expected reality. "One area of weakness I would like to improve upon while attending Pace is my voice. By this, I mean having the confidence to be heard in group settings. I look forward to developing my medical knowledge in order to do so, and I look forward to taking on a larger role in the context of a healthcare team so that I may advocate for my patients."

"Well, I would like to improve my self-confidence. I want not to overthink things and second guess myself. Building my knowledge, I believe, will strengthen my self-confidence to advocate for my patients in the future. I would also read self-help books to help me build my self-confidence and participate in school activities to help develop myself."

"Trust is a significant component of relationship building, and trust is something we earn over time. I will earn this trust and build great relationships by being transparent in communicating, doing what I commit, and delivering my work on time. Now, as a nurse, I earn the trust of my leaders, co-workers, and medical learners by being helpful, doing what I promise, and being honest with them when feedback is required. With strong trust, teams can accomplish great things together, and I sincerely look forward to this important component of teamwork when I am a Physician Assistant."

"In addition to stellar interpersonal skills, I believe the most important quality a Physician Assistant should possess is the desire for lifelong learning and knowledge advancement. It is a medical professional's responsibility to remain up to date with the most current medical practices and studies; therefore, I believe it is vital for a PA to have the drive it takes to uphold this responsibility. As a nurse, I commit to taking new coursework regularly and have obtained numerous certifications since completing my nursing degree. For instance, I am a Certified Diabetes Educator and recently obtained my credentials in Advanced Hospice Care."

"I feel that selflessness is the most important quality for a PA to have. this translates into a desire to advocate for the patient's best interests, really listen to their concerns, and have the humility to consult with other professionals to make sure each patient is receiving the best and most up-to-date care possible."

"During my shadowing, I have gained great insight into the PA profession. The single most important quality a PA should possess is patience. Patience because as a PA, there will be times when a patient would want to converse a lot or ask many questions. Some come in angry, and you have to find a way to calm them down, or the place you are working for is adding a lot of patients to your schedule and want you to hurry to see all of them. So patience is the essential quality a PA should possess."

"I would like to see health-based organizations and facilities put more efforts into patient-centered care. This improvement could mean cutting down patient wait times, improving hospital safety, and boosting community engagement initiatives, building greater trust between the public and their physicians. We are evolving fast, and I am happy to see how far the patient-centered approach has come since I started my educational path within medicine a few years ago."

Being an aspiring Physician Assistant means that you need to take a keen interest in current events by closely following the challenges the medical industry faces. These disparities have influenced my decision to become a physician assistant, a profession that was founded to address a shortage of PCPs."

"High cost of care. As someone who has experienced hardship, I know how hard it is to pay for a copay or even medical care. It is even hard for retired elderly who cannot afford the cost of medical visits and medication. I have witnessed this during my time shadowing at the internal medicine office. Tim, the PA, would tell me to get them a lot of samples of the medication that the pharmaceuticals company would give."

"An issue facing all healthcare workers, especially providers such as physicians and PAs, is the high risk of burnout that they face. Providers face high workloads, high demand, and a lot of emotional distress depending on the specialty they work in. As rewarding as it is to be the one responsible for someone's success in terms of their health, it can be very emotionally distressing to try and fail a treatment plan that you created. Providers also have to have difficult conversations with patients and their loved ones, make difficult decisions, and witness patients in pain, traumatic states, and even witness patients pass away. Working in the trauma ICU we see patients in very difficult and vulnerable states. I have learned the value of implementing wellness routines in our everyday lives to ensure that we are performing at our best, for both ourselves and the patients. Simple things such as breathing exercises, having good nutrition, and finding activities outside of work that relieve stress can be ways to minimize the risk of burnout."

What is your opinion on socialized health care versus privatized health care?

"I believe that the basic concepts of socialized health care and privatized health care are good by nature and resonate with a range of patients. Some of my peers have expressed their love for socialized health care because, although they pay a higher tax rate, they are not caught in an expensive whirlwind when they face illness. On the flip side, privatized health care can offer significantly shorter wait times which is very important for those with a potentially critical or debilitating illness. I believe it is important to have options for socialized and privatized health care so that people can choose the most suitable option for their situation."

These insurance companies are also difficult to work with as a clinician. It can be difficult and time-consuming to contact insurance representatives."

"My option on socialized health care is that many people would benefit from this type of health care. It would probably lower the cost of health care in America. Privatized health care allows us to have a shorter wait time and the ability to choose our provider and medical facility. It is suitable to have an open mind to this type of topic."

What did you do to prepare for your interview with the PA Admissions Committee?

"I appreciate the opportunity to be considered for the PA program and was sure to conduct a great deal of research on Pace University, the College of Health Professions, and the program requirements before today's interview. I started by holding an informational interview with two Pace alumni I know. I also spoke with a couple of Pace students in the physician assistant program. Then, I hired an interview coach to help polish my interview skills, ensuring I made a great impression on the Admissions Committee."

"Well, I watched one of your information sessions on your website. I also did a lot of research online, looking at the PA program's website and looking for any social media."

"If I am not accepted into the PA program this cycle, I will actively work to build a stronger application next cycle. I have arranged to begin working with a private practice to earn additional clinical hours and gain a broader range of experiences. I would continue my growth and knowledge in this field and re-apply to the PA program at Pace University once I felt I had a more competitive chance for acceptance."

The PA Program Admissions Committee wants to know that you have thought through all options and scenarios if you do not earn acceptance this cycle. "I have been preparing for the PA-C for about one month now. I recently discovered that the NCCPA offers practice tests for a fee. Once I feel ready for a practice round, I will order the practice test. Rest assured, I am a diligent and prepared learner and will be ready to do well on the PA-C exam when the time comes."

"I enjoy reading The Lancet and also subscribe to PLOS Magazine. In addition to these resources, I have Kaiser Health News and The Wall Street Journal Health Blog on my go-to list. As a medical professional and an aspiring Physician Assistant, it's important to diversify where I receive my news and information. I am also open to new suggestions and look forward to becoming privy to more helpful resources as I complete my PA program."

"I am currently reading 'The Heart's Invisible Furies.' It is a novel about an adopted homosexual male living in Ireland in the 1950s. It is extremely well-written with humorous sarcastic undertones while also providing insight into the oppression that homosexuals have faced throughout history and the feelings of abandonment that adopted children can have."

"I finished reading "Atlas of the Heart" by Brene Brown. It is about 87 emotions, and she explains through her research a definition of each emotion and examples of how humans experience each emotion. I enjoyed her explanation of empathy and how we believe we have to be in someone else's shoes to connect with them, but it's not true. For example, she explains if someone tells you a story about a lost pet and you never lost a pet but have felt the emotion of sadness, you can relate."

What other PA programs have you applied to and where does Pace University rank?

"In addition to applying to Pace University Lenox Hill, I have applied to three other schools offering PA programs in the New York area, including Albany Medical College, Clarkson University, and Long Island University. One of the things I admire about this university is that of more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the US, Pace ranks in the top 250. The Pace Path initiative is a significant reason why Pace University is a top-ranking option for me. I have done some research and see that a few local schools offer seminars and workshops regularly. There are also some online options that I can take. I look forward to keeping my medical knowledge current while expanding my existing knowledge base."

"I understand that shadowing experiences are highly valuable, and I have looked into experiencing a shadowing program this summer. I have a few friends with family members who work in the health care field and have started asking around to see if anyone could help facilitate a PA shadowing experience before I begin my PA education. I am hopeful that this experience will be available to me, and I will maintain persistence in asking my network. In the meantime, I started reaching out to a few PAs through LinkedIn and asking them for a brief informational interview. So far, I have had one constructive 30-minute conversation with a PA who is five years into their career. I learned a lot about the day-to-day work, the challenges, and how I can best prepare myself to succeed in my PA education."
