"I think I remember this one. It follows the Archimedes principle, doesn't it? When the anchor is in the boat, it contributes to the mass of the boat due to its buoyancy and weight distribution, causing the water level to rise. Should the smaller and denser object of the anchor be dropped in the tank and it rests on the bottom, the mass of the boat is reduced, increasing its buoyancy, and the water level would go down. However, if the anchor did not touch the bottom and was below the boat, pulling down on it and still contributing to its increased weight distribution and entering the water, the water level would rise almost imperceptibly due to it also entering the water and increasing its volume. Is that right?"

You are standing on the surface of the Earth. You walk one mile south, one mile west, and one mile north. You end up exactly where you started. Where are you?

"Well, for this to make sense, since there are only three moves involved here, the geometrical shape of the route taken cannot possibly be a square, right? To take three moves and end up where I started, the shape would have to be a triangle. For that to be the case, where on Earth would I have to be if I were to end up where I started in three moves like that? It would have to be a fixed point on the planet. The planet is spherical, but if I walk one mile south, then one mile west, and then one mile north, those are fixed directions that cannot be altered. That would mean it was a direction that is fixed, such as The North Pole."

This is a common brain teaser designed to observe your analytical problem-solving skills in real-time. When preparing for a question like this, record yourself trying to answer it out loud first so you can study how you analytically solve it. That is what they will be interested in observing and will be able to tell if you've cheated. You want to go through the whole problem-solving process, communicating clearly when this question is posed. However, if you already knew the answer, that's fine too. But this may not be the riddle they ask you to solve, as this is just one of many.

"The achievement I am most proud of, so far, was completing my undergrad, top of my class. While maintaining solid grades, I was also President of our school's Diversity Club and spent time volunteering at the local animal shelter."

The interviewers would like to know what areas of achievement or significant accomplishments you've surmounted and which you find most noteworthy to share. Share why this was significant for you, what it means for your future, and what you hope to accomplish next. Do you have a plan in place for managing the challenging coursework ahead of you?

"I have formed a three-pronged plan to tackle the stressors that may occur during my pharmaceutical program. These three approaches will address my academic stress, the emotional strain of adjusting to my new surroundings as I relocate, and the financial strain associated with high tuition. For academic stress, I plan to create a study schedule that I will stick to closely. I will join study groups to gain a broader perspective from others, and I have made arrangements for a part-time tutor if needed. For the strain that will result from uprooting myself, I have planned to join a couple of university clubs to get to know other students and make new friends, avoiding feelings of loneliness. I also plan to FaceTime my family every week to prevent myself from feeling homesick. The financial commitment to becoming a pharmacist is a reality that I have come to terms with. I have created a solid financial plan to pay back my loans and enlisted a financial advisor to help me create a student budget that I will adhere to closely. I feel well-prepared to cope with and address the immense workload and other expectations ahead of me as a pharmacy school student."

Describe the emotional impact you experience when suffering a setback.

"Experiencing a setback is always disappointing and can be very disheartening, especially when involving a project I have put a lot of time and effort into. I understand that setbacks happen to everyone - despite their level of expertise or years of experience. If I experience a major setback, I will take a few moments to debrief internally, get some fresh air if possible, or discuss what I could have done differently with a mentor. Then, I move on. Rather than dwell on my mistakes, I choose to learn from them."

This question evaluates your emotional maturity. Your grades impact your future success, and this may have a more significant impact in the medical field than in other professions. Everyone processes the stress and disappointment of setbacks differently. Disappointment is natural, yet allowing those emotions to dictate your behavior won't move you closer to success. Tell us about someone who has served as a mentor for your pursuits.

"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my grandmother. She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

The figure who served as a mentor doesn't necessarily need to be aligned to your profession of choice, although they certainly can be. This person could be someone who guided your work ethic, dedication, moral compass, or values. The goal here is to relay that they shaped the construct of your character in some manner. Keep it related to your professionalism or dedication. Any valuable lessons they imparted are worth mentioning here. How does it make you feel when you receive feedback and criticism?

"Last year, I received a low grade on a chemistry project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I could do. It was a compliment and a challenge rolled into one! I re-did the assignment with more passion the second time around. My grade improved significantly, and I thanked that professor for holding me to a higher standard."

Your admissions interviewers are interested in how you respond to criticism. You'll want to convey you're confident and mature enough to accept feedback and criticism and apply it towards your professional and personal growth, even when not delivered in a friendly, easy-to-absorb manner. This reflects emotional maturity and stability, especially when you successfully implemented changes in response to the feedback.

"When I was studying architecture, my team and I worked on a case study on the urban landscape of Chinatown in downtown Los Angeles. Our assignment was to produce an infographic that conveyed the essence and history of this part of the city. We ended up working apart from each other and then pieced the project together. Our professor criticized our rough draft for the lack of visual coherence that might confuse and bore the intended audience. Going forward, more deliberate communication and in-person collaboration became paramount for the project, and the result was a seamless collage of images and information."

How would you describe your approach to studying for exams?

"I am a well-organized student and have come up with a plan that works well for me. When I prepare for an exam, I map out the content I need to learn and divide that content over the number of days I have available to prepare. When I create a study calendar, I leave the final three days leading up to the exam to review the entire library of content. I am a big fan of study aids, as I believe they work much better than simply reading and re-reading the materials. Aids such as flashcards are more helpful than highlighting my notes. I also create practice problems and, when possible, will pair up with a fellow student to test each other in written form or verbal lightning rounds. My approach has been successful, as reflected in my GPA."

"At the beginning of the semester, I ask my professors how to succeed in their courses and what methods of studying are most effective for their classes. Then, I write down the dates of my exams. From there, I allocate time to prepare for each test. I ask my professors what topics are important for the exams and prioritize the material that needs to be studied. I do the assigned readings and make notes of the topics I do not understand well enough and set aside time to work on them."

"I have applied to four other schools. Those schools are A, B, C, and D. My interest in Midwestern University is strong because you are highly regarded in the pharmaceutical industry. The reputation of Midwestern University is unmatched. I would be so proud to say that I graduated from this school."

The interviewers are curious about how varied your choice of schools is. Transparency and sincerity are of value here, yet it is wise to filter what you volunteer in how Midwestern ranks among the others you've applied to. Avoid saying anything offensive, such as, 'this school is my last choice.' "Currently, I am reading 'Ego is the Enemy' by Ryan Holiday. It is a book about ambition, resilience, and success. I feel that everyone should read it - it comes highly recommended."

This 'getting to know you' question provides insights into your personality. However, when things relax in an interview, keep your eye on the big-picture. Remember why you are there. It's up to you how you want to present yourself in this opportunity, so take care of want to say about yourself. Show the interviewer that you feed your mind regularly. Your answer doesn't necessarily need to be a book. It could be a paper, a study, someone else's thesis, anything. It could also be a work of fiction if what you're reading is for entertainment value. However, you should share something at a collegiate reading level or higher. Impress by suggesting you're reading multiple books simultaneously with ease.

"I recently read a book called Brooklyn, which is a story about an Irish girl named Eilish who leaves her home in Enniscorthy to work in Brooklyn. This book resonates with me because, for most of her life, her major life decisions were made by other people, but at the end of the book, her time in Brooklyn makes her realize that she has control over her destiny. This is something that I have struggled with for much of my adult life."

"I am an avid marathon runner and have traveled to 10 countries in the last three years to compete in various races. I am a competitive individual and enjoy keeping fit. I believe my competitive nature will benefit me as a student and future pharmacist. I will have a consistent drive to deliver my best work while showing an innate need to remain top-of-the-game as a provider."

When encountering academic difficulties, how do you react?

"When I encountered academic difficulty in the past, I recognized the issue early and approached my professor for additional information or study resources. With these resources, I either increase the time spent reviewing the class material or engage another person to increase my understanding of the topic. For instance, during my biophysical chemistry class this year, I fell behind as we approached the subject of molecular interactions. To ensure my success, I hired a Department of Chemistry tutor. This approach was beneficial, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the subject, which improved my grade. Should I come across any difficulties while attending this pharmacy program, I will not hesitate to seek outside assistance."

You should never make life-changing decisions from a place of emotional stress. Why choose pharmacology over another field of medicine?

"There are many rewarding professions I could have pursued within the healthcare industry; however, I chose pharmacology because I have experienced firsthand how the care and attention of a diligent pharmacist can change a person's life. From a young age, I had severe environmental and drug-related allergies. I suffered for years from headaches and ear infections and often reacted to medications prescribed to me. It wasn't until I visited a highly attentive pharmacist that I was told some of my health issues might be due to medication sensitivities. I went back to my family doctor, who referred me to an allergist. These medical professionals put me on the right self-care plan while alleviating many of my long-term symptoms. I already knew I wanted to work in the medical industry; however, this experience prompted me to look further into the pharmacy profession. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to learn more about medications and help my future clients transform their health through proper prescribing and dosing."

Throughout the years, I learned that access to medicine and healthcare services should not be a privilege but a right, since everybody deserves access to an important medicine. They will be relentless in providing proper care and dosing for all and ensuring that their patients receive the best drug options available. Integrity is essential, so I am actively working on increasing my integrity level in various personal and professional situations. I show integrity by keeping my appointments and commitments and fulfilling my promises."

Integrity is a very important quality to me as I believe that a pharmacist has a duty to be truthful and act with conviction of conscience. "An important quality for a pharmacist, as with any other health care professional, is empathy. When I was shadowing at a dental clinic that worked exclusively with the special needs population, I saw how the dentists interacted with their patients with intellectual disabilities. I do not plan to sleep in or live an irregular lifestyle but to follow a strict timeline and have healthy relationships and a healthy mind."

"My self-development plan involves maintaining a work-life balance. While the pharmacy program curriculum is intensive, it is important still to make time for other things in order to remain grounded and also retain one's identity. I would spend time doing the things that I love and also pursuing other interests that I have outside of pharmacy. I would make time to be with my friends and family and also travel around when possible. In addition, I have taken an interest in agriculture and would like to look further into on my own time."

What kind of impact would you like to have as a pharmacist?

"I have chosen to become a pharmacist because of the broad impact I can make on my patients, their families, and my community. Being a pharmacist is much more than dispensing medication. It's a career where I can get to know many of my patients on a closer level since they will visit me regularly for prescription refills. I can educate my patients on proper dosing, which impacts much of their day, including side-effect management, appetite levels, sleep quality, and even mental clarity. I find it fascinating that he was the first person ever to believe that disease and death were not a result of the anger of gods. I would ask him about his first conversation about this topic and the reactions of others when he theorized that disease is not caused by superstitious beliefs. He would have had to have faced so many roadblocks, yet, he continued to believe in his work."

I was quite interested to hear that the government has agreed to pay $1.95 billion for these additional doses. Of course, the hope is that these additional doses will help us to protect more individuals and end this pandemic more rapidly."

"Although I am a supporter of traditional medicine, I understand that alternative medicine can offer benefits for some. People need to educate themselves better before jumping into 'all-natural' therapy. Prescribed teas and herbs can be dangerous if taken in the wrong dosages. Even though it is natural, your body may not react well to it. As with all types of medicine and practices, research and education are critical."

With that said, I look forward to coaching my customers on proper drug use and dosages and creating lasting relationships with the community where I work."

"Yes, I am aware of cases of malpractice in the pharmaceutical field, and it can be disheartening to hear these stories. Although I would be diligent with my best work, perfection is not guaranteed, and mistakes happen. If I was accused of negligence or wrongdoing, I would take full responsibility for my part in the situation. However, I would also defend my expertise and decision-making skills. The best thing any medical professional can do is try their best every day, document their actions clearly, and choose to work with colleagues they trust."

"I understand that prescription drug abuse is an epidemic and that, as a pharmacist, I must be diligent in recognizing the signs of abuse in my customers/patients. I have researched this social issue a great deal, and I know that some of the signs include a patient being adamant about receiving a certain brand of drug, doctor-hopping, and even forging doctor's prescriptions. I will be committed during my career to diligence and awareness of this social issue."

One significant impact that has interested me most is how we dispense medications, ranking particular meds based on importance. During COVID-19, pharmacists have experienced detrimental drug shortages due to manufacturing and transportation challenges. In the future, I believe pharmacists will have to revisit their distribution model and how they approach collaborating with biotech and pharmaceutical companies. "I spent a lot of time and energy preparing for the PCAT because it is crucial to do well on that test. I hired a tutor who specializes in PCAT preparation, which helped immensely."

PCAT is the Pharmacy College Admission Test. This test measures your scientific knowledge and general aptitude. However, I learned a lot about myself and what I want to do and be while serving in the military. So when I came back to America, I worked hard and saw huge improvements academically. I changed my study habits and made friends. I talked to my professors every chance I got to understand the materials better. At this point, I completed the prerequisites with strong grades and am confident that I can manage any challenge."

Tell us about your academic performance up to this point. Where do you feel you’ve excelled, and where would you like to improve next?

"I am proud of my achievements during my undergrad education. Those courses added so much value that I will bring to my graduate program. My best grades were always in my chemistry courses. I feel that I excelled in these because they are related to pharmacology, which I have a solid interest in. I can better myself in terms of time management. I overextended myself last semester with volunteer opportunities, and my study time suffered slightly. Now that I have identified the reason behind my time management challenges, I will only see improvement moving forward."

"There was a period of time during my undergrad when I performed poorly in my classes. At the time, my family was struggling financially, so I felt the need to contribute to the household. I struggled to manage my time between working and studying, and my grades suffered as a result. Since then, I have shifted my priority to performing well academically by always going to class, talking to my professors when I struggled to understand certain concepts, and dedicating a set number of hours to studying outside of the classroom. I also reduced the number of hours I worked to make this happen. When I sorted my priorities in the final years of my undergraduate education, my grades improved dramatically, and I was able to achieve a competitive score on my DAT. I believe that these more recent achievements are reflective of my ability to succeed in pharmacy school."
