"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to work every day."

Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

Reliable transportation can be a personal vehicle, Uber, public transportation, carpool, motorcycle or bicycle, or walking. Focus on describing what form of reliable transportation you will use to get to work if hired.

"I take public transit; however, I find it very reliable. I was late to work only once last year due to a snowstorm that stalled all of our employees' commutes - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and always come to work on time."

How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?

"Whenever I have had a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I try to learn their communication style and emulate it. Sometimes you must relate to others in their style to be understood."

You cannot force others to communicate with you in a way you would always prefer. Talk to the interviewer about a time you have handled a supervisor who does not interact with you in a way you like. Be sure not to mention names and end on a positive note.

Instead of making it seem like the supervisor was at fault for not communicating in the manner you would have liked, let the interviewer know that you try to find a way to communicate that you both understand. That shows you are proactive and value workplace relationships and communicating with others.

"I have had great supervisors in my previous positions; however, if faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."

I find this leadership style effective since my team members feel included and trusted and are more likely to take pride in ownership of their work."

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. I was sick for two days, and a note from my doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I notified my supervisor of the situation, so it was not an issue. I always try to be at least 10 minutes early for my shift."

A part of being a diligent employee is ensuring you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to be 10-15 minutes early rather than just showing up on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your past year's attendance at your previous job.

Focus on giving the exact number of days you missed work and why. If the interviewer deems your absence from work an excused and unavoidable reason to miss work, it will likely not be an issue. If you have many unexcused absences, they may disqualify you as a viable candidate.

A job search isn't just a one-sided hunt. You must also feel as though this is a good fit for you. Tell the interviewer about your ideal employer. Be specific, and be sure to keep the conversation positive. Avoid speaking poorly of any previous managers or organizations.

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary-based questions arise.

Salary questions can be a bit tricky. You want to earn a decent salary but do not want to respond in a way that will talk you out of a job. "I am looking to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. I looked at many job postings and interviewed some carefully selected places, but you are my front-runner. The interviewer wants to see that you are self-aware and understand the type of manager or employer that brings out the best in you. Some individuals prefer a close working relationship with a lot of accountability, while others prefer space and autonomy. If you are unsure of the management style at Waitrose, try to leave your answer as open as possible. You can ask the interviewer to describe their management style if you wish.

It is best to show that you can work with various management styles. Even if the hiring manager describes their management style, it does not mean every manager will lead the same way.

"Yes, I do have a question. Thank you for asking. After everything we have gone over in this interview, do you have any hesitancy in offering me the position?"

The interviewer wants to ensure that all your questions about the company or job role are answered during the interview. It is best to ask at least a question or two, showing the interviewer your eagerness to learn all you can. Of course, you want to review the job announcement and research Waitrose beforehand so you are not asking questions that could be found during your research.

Focus on asking questions specific to the role you are interviewing for or the company culture and work environment. If you have past performance reviews or letters of recommendation from your references, review them before your interview. You will be better prepared to answer the question if what they wrote is fresh in your mind. It is also good to have copies for the interviewer if they would like a copy for their file.

"I have two copies of letters of recommendation if you want them for your file. My references describe me as honest, dependable, energetic, and compassionate. They mentioned that I have not missed a day of work the entire time I worked for them and that I demonstrate strong leadership skills even when not working in a leadership position."

Waitrose conducts a two-year reference check on all of our candidates. Is there anything you would like to disclose at this time?

"I am happy to comply with any reference check required. My criminal record is clean, but I did have poor credit two years ago. I went through a nasty divorce, and our house went into foreclosure. I have been slowly building my credit and recently qualified for a mortgage to purchase another home. I do not participate in drug use, and you can be assured that I will maintain a clean record if you hire me for this role."

The interviewer would like to know if anything negative will appear in your reference check to determine if they want to move forward in the hiring process. It costs quite a bit of time and money to conduct reference checks, so they want to know ahead of time if there will be a reason for you to be disqualified as a viable candidate.

Focus on being honest in your response. It will not look good for you if you say nothing will show up during your reference check and something does.

"No, nothing negative will show up in my reference check. I do not have a criminal record and have never even had a ticket or citation issued."

Why should we not hire you?

"There is no reason why you should not hire me. I meet and exceed your requirements and have the knowledge and experience you are looking for. I am energetic, dependable, honest, and have a strong work ethic. If you hire me for the position, you will not be disappointed in my performance."

The interviewer hopes to hear that there is no reason not to hire you! Tell the interviewer you would be a great employee, and confidently share that there is no reason not to hire you. You might wrap it up by sharing that you are customer-focused, have a proven employment record, and have excellent references.

Focus on describing the attributes that make you a great employee and how they will benefit Waitrose if hired. Assure the interviewer there is no reason why they shouldn't hire you.

Focus on being direct and honest, and explain why you left your last place of employment. If you gave notice, were laid off, or fired, describe the circumstances behind your leaving. Be sure to end your response on a positive note and tell the interviewer how you are excited to have the opportunity to interview for the position with their company.

"I left my last job because I was moving out of the area. They did not have a store in the area where I moved, so I could not transfer. I gave two weeks' notice and left the company on good terms."

After reading the job description, what do you like most about this position?

"There are many aspects of the job description that are appealing. What I like most about this position is being in charge of training new employees and conducting annual performance evaluations. I have worked in a leadership capacity for the past five years and love sharing my knowledge and experience with others. I also enjoy the annual reviews because it lets me show my staff how well they are doing and how much I appreciate their work."

The interviewer asks this question to see that you have read the job description in its entirety and determine what aspect of the role you like the most. Most Waitrose job postings have many job duties you will be asked to perform. The interviewer wants to know what you like the most to see where your strengths lie.

"I am very comfortable working independently. I have worked in retail for five years and have worked independently and with other team members, depending on where I worked. I do not prefer close supervision as I am confident in my skills. If I have a question or require assistance from my supervisor, I do not hesitate to ask them."

Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is aggressive towards you or a coworker?

"If I had an aggressive and disrespectful customer, I would calmly ask them how I could help. If security needed to be called, I would do so. Everyone needs to remain respectful, and I would not hesitate to ask a customer to offer that respect in return."

Retail and customer service-based roles often require diplomacy when working with the public. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle an aggressive customer while remaining calm and professional.

"I have a rule always to treat my customers how I would want treatment in a store or establishment. Customer service is vital to a company's success. by asking how I can help them, listening to their responses, and providing excellent customer service. I then ask if there is anything else I can help them with."

Retail environments are competitive, and a business can go down with one honest mistake and poor review. Discuss with the interviewer how you ensure that your customers receive the best service from you.

The more you can find out about Waitrose, the better. "Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important, and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online reviews. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

As a retail employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle a situation like this with poise while keeping the customer happy and the needs of the company in mind as well.

"I did very well in math during High School and am comfortable with the math skills required for accepting cash, balancing a cash float, and performing inventory-related tasks. I would rate myself a 9 out of 10 as there is always room for improvement in any skill."

Strong math skills are an asset in any retail-based role. Assure the interviewer that you are comfortable with the math associated with handling cash transactions and performing inventory counts.

The hiring manager wants you to rate your skills from 1-10. You want a rating of at least an 8 to show you have strong math skills. However, you want to avoid giving yourself a 10, as there is always room for improvement of any skill.

"I rate myself an 8 out of 10. My math skills are strong, and I am confident I can meet your expectations regarding accepting customer payments. I did not rate myself higher because I feel everyone can improve their skills as no one is perfect."

This position requires you to wear a uniform to work. Have you worn a uniform in the workplace before? How do you feel about this?

"Yes, I have worn a uniform for work at restaurant XYZ and when I was a retail manager for company ABC. I have seen the uniforms worn by the retail employees at Waitrose and see that it adds a strong level of professionalism."

Many retail-based organizations require their employees to wear a uniform. Talk to the interviewer about any times you have been required to wear a uniform and your thoughts on this. Be sure to keep your answer positive and avoid speaking poorly of the practice surrounding uniforms.

Focus on describing the positive reasons for wearing a uniform. Employees in uniform are identifiable to customers, look professional, promote the company's brand, and show unity among the staff.

In our retail stores, we take great pride in our merchandising and displays. Do you consider yourself a creative person capable of making an attractive retail display?

"I have a strong creative flair and enjoy creating attractive displays. I think I have enough experience in retail to understand what attracts customers and prompts them to purchase. The displays I have seen in your stores are fascinating, and I would love to be a part of that creative flair. I have some photos on my phone of displays I created if you want to see them."

If you have examples of displays you have created, be sure to share that with the interviewer now. You may have a portfolio or even photos on your phone to share. If you have unique ideas for creative displays, let the interviewer know your thoughts.

If you have never created a display, that is fine. While the interviewer would prefer someone with experience, the question asks if you are a creative person capable of creating attractive displays. "Last week, my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some staff complained that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help, and I do not mind helping others when needed."

Display to the interviewer that you can do more than the bare minimum. Show that you can react appropriately when you see that your employer, coworker, or customer has a need that goes beyond your usual day-to-day expectations.

Focus on giving an example of going above and beyond the typical job duties that will make you stand out from other candidates. Perhaps you helped your manager with their workload, offered to help a customer with their purchases, or covered a shift for a coworker when they had a sudden, unexpected family emergency.

"Just yesterday, I had a customer make a purchase and noticed that she was struggling with her bags. She had a stroller, a couple of kids, and a lot of bags to carry. I offered to help her out to her car, and she gratefully accepted. I also helped her by holding her baby while she put the stroller away. It felt excellent to go above the call of duty that day."

"I am very much an over-achiever and find that the best way for me to be recognized for a job well done is through words of kindness. I am easily encouraged, and my best reward is knowing that my hard work is noticed."

Many people like recognition in some way for their accomplishments in the workplace, while others do not require public recognition. Perhaps you like to receive gifts, financial perks, public recognition, kind words, or title promotions. Share with the interviewer how you would like to be recognized for your hard work.

You want to be honest in your response without sounding needy. If you come across as the type of person who requires constant recognition for everything you do, the interviewer may feel that you would be a challenge to work with.

"As a sales professional, I am driven by a challenge with a financial perk. Sales contests, for example, are a great way to motivate me."

"Last year, when I was managing our weekend shift, I noticed a pretty solid opportunity for us to save on overtime hours. I created a presentation and gave it to my manager, who took it to upper management. The changes were implemented, and the company saved $15,000 in the first month. I was very proud of the suggestion that I made, and that upper management and my manager had the confidence in me to make the change."

In addition to handling change, the interviewer wants to see if you can recognize when change is required and be confident enough to present that to your organization. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you were able to suggest a change in the workplace. If the organization implemented the change, describe the results from that change.

If you have not had the opportunity to make a suggestion regarding a change in the workplace, be honest in your response. If you have suggested change in another area of your life, use that example in your response.

"The store where I currently work is a family-run shop where they operated based on trust and didn't have a loss prevention plan. We were having some problems with theft because of it. I suggested we install a couple of cameras inside the store to deter anyone from stealing. So far, we have seen a 56% decline in the overall loss."

"My current sales position is highly commission-based, so my colleagues and I are quite competitive. Despite being competitive, we have a great work environment where we help each other when someone is struggling to meet their quota. We coach each other on sales techniques and share success stories. The result has been a positive work environment with healthy competition."

This question determines if you can function well in a competitive environment. Think back to when you were racing others to achieve the highest sales, working towards a promotion, or eagerly trying to win a new contract. Show the interviewer that you rose to the challenge and were excited to push yourself to be the best. It is a definite plus if you have cheered on your competitors and helped them along the way. Finally, be sure to mention any successful outcome.
