"I have always been passionate about travel and am something of a restless and high-energy person. I have a lot of customer service experience, and have often been described as a social butterfly. For a long time, I have dreamt of pursuing an opportunity in this industry. Then one day I was listening to a record, saw the Virgin Records record label, thought of Virgin Atlantic, thought butterflies have wings, why shouldn't I, and here I am, pursuing my dream."

This is a standard introductory question designed to get you to relax and let your personality shine. They want to get to know you, especially if you are the right fit and their ideal candidate. "We look for people with drive and ambition, those who think, see and do things differently. We employ, develop, and promote employees based on their skills and values. So, if you're committed, engaged and have a desire to learn." So try to relax, and share who you are, why, at this point in your career you are pursuing an opportunity with them, what in your career led you here, and where you hope Virgin Atlantic will take your career next.

"I obtained a distinction in a customer service apprenticeship last July, which was mostly practical work. This was completed in a well reputable hospitality business, I now work in retail alongside this restaurant job. This is because I can adapt to different service cultures and am always eager to learn. I have a passion for customer service and making sure customers and colleagues feel safe comfortable and welcome within my presence. I am known for being consistently positive, passionate, and stress-free in and out of the workplace. I am an exceptional communicator and team player who has undoubtedly strong ethics. Putting my blood sweat and tears into my customer service roles over the last 2 and a half years has put me in the best position possible to give me an opportunity of getting my challenging yet thrilling dream job."

Flight Attendants work a wide range of hours, occasional overtime, and being on-call. Would you have any issues with accommodating such a schedule?

"In my most recent position with Airline XYZ, I had an inconsistent schedule that required me to often be on call. I worked many weekends and holidays. This schedule is part of the lifestyle of a Flight Attendant, I completely understand. I'm happy to work any hours offered to me."

Being a flight attendant is a lifestyle, and one which many candidates compete for. As with any such position, for the right person, the benefits out way the drawbacks. "Flight attendant, steward, air crew or cabin crew. Whatever name you use, when you're part of the Virgin Atlantic team, you'll be shaping the future of long-haul travel, creating exciting alternatives to the norm at 37,000 feet. There are challenging days, it's never 9-5, but when you add your own dash of flair, to make a customer's flight, there's no feeling like it." If you find yourself pursuing a crew position, assure the interviewer that you're aware of the schedule and would have no trouble adapting to it.

"I am available for a wide range of hours and overtime. I prefer to be made aware of my schedule ahead of time so that I can make appropriate childcare arrangements."

"Working at 37,000 feet with different schedules and activities every day is just a dream. I am used to working overtime and long hours, a typical Saturday for me is 9 am-2 am with 2 jobs. I am also used to spontaneously having to cover shifts, this is because it benefits the team and shows I'm a dedicated member of staff."

All employees of Virgin Atlantic are expected to wear a uniform to work. Are you comfortable with this policy?

"I am accustomed to wearing a uniform at work and am happy to abide by any dress code requirements to work with Virgin Atlantic."

For the safety of the passengers, it is integral members of the crew can be identified quickly. However, company uniform policies often contribute to job dissatisfaction, lower performance metrics, and attrition. This is especially common when the employee doesn't find the uniform attractive, comfortable, or grows bored with its conformity. Therefore, most airlines have put concerted efforts into redesigning their uniforms for greater comfort with a wider variety of options. "Uniforms are very important in this industry so, yes, I am comfortable with this policy. And I love Vivienne Westwood uniforms!"

What Virgin Atlantic locations interest you the most?

"I am very interested in Seattle, and I love Manchester as well! But I would be open to exploring any possibility thrown my way!"

From London to New York to San Francisco to Seattle, Virgin Atlantic has airport locations across the globe. Your interviewer is curious what locations are at the top of your list for being based out of. So share with them which destinations appeal to you most, while exhibiting the flexibility to do whatever it takes to win this opportunity.

"I have always been intrigued by Boston and Texas, but out of 41 different routes, there's never a bad place to go! I am open and excited to visit anywhere I am rostered."

Personality fit is important to us at Virgin Atlantic. How would you describe your personality?

"I am fun, happy, confident, friendly, and a go-getter. A friend to all, and the life of the party!"

Owned by Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic has a particular workplace culture, and they are seeking people who will fit into that culture very well. On the Virgin Atlantic website, there is a quote from Sir Richard Branson which says, "I'm often asked what it is that makes Virgin different. The simple answer is - our people. If it weren't for a bunch of well trained, motivated and, above all, happy people doing their bit, we'd have never launched a record label, never mind a fleet of 747s." Personality and character are two very different things. The interviewer is looking for more information on your traits vs. your integrity. This answer could include buzzwords such as extroverted, energetic, and confident.

"I am confident, I throw myself in the deep end straight away in my customer service roles. I am also empathetic, this is so important when taking care of nervous passengers and in case of emergency. Lastly, my passion is so noticeable and drives every single action and decision I make."

What unique qualities would you bring to our company?

"I have a unique ability to strike up a conversation and build rapport with nearly anyone. This skill is a great help when it comes to customer service and sales. My up-selling percentages are always very high."

There are some things that your resume cannot do. Showing off your fabulous personality is one of them. Research their website and how they define their ideal candidates in their recruiting efforts. Examine the language they use. Tie in how your unique qualities would benefit their company, and how you fit their mold, when talking to your interviewer about what makes you unique.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

"I am looking for a long-term fit in my next position. As you can see, I had strong progress and career growth in my previous company. I would love to see the same success with your company. I did notice on your website that you have global leadership opportunities. If I could work my way into a role like that, I would be thrilled."

Interviewing and on-boarding is a costly and time-consuming process for any company and hiring manager, and your interviewer has their reputation to protect. Your training programs are industry renowned and well respected which is also interesting to me. I would love nothing more than to endure and grow with Virgin Atlantic."

Your interviewer is curious about your reasons for pursuing this opportunity with them. They have a vested interest in ensuring whomever they hire will prove to be a worthy investment, resulting in a long-term professional relationship. How you answer will help them determine if such a relationship will be one-sided or mutually beneficial. Someone who is just in it for the travel perks has little to offer. Someone who is interested in growing within their position and company, and has a lot of drive and ambition, has a lot more to offer. Their recruiting efforts offer "ongoing coaching and development throughout your career" aim to appeal to such talent.

Don't limit your research to their career site. Spend ample time research all their websites for more clues and insights into their company culture. "Our onboard heroes, keeping you safe, and delivering our famous service in style. On your journey, you'll meet Cabin Crew, Cabin Service Supervisors and Flight Service Managers - look out for a purple shirt or silver tie to spot who the manager is on your next flight with us!"

If you could start your career over again, what direction would you take?

"I certainly do not regret the direction I have taken my career; however, if I had to start over in a new direction completely I would likely pursue my Degree in Education and become a teacher. Both of my parents were teachers, and they seemed to have a very fulfilling career. I enjoy coaching and leading others so, any tasks in my current career that related to these skills, are very welcome. In fact, anytime I've taken in-flight training courses, such as safety, first aid, and CPR, I've always envied those instructors and that role, and thought, how great it is that they get to do that!"

Take care when answering this question and align your answer with the career opportunities which they offer. Such as one employee who they share "always dreamed of being a pilot, and safe to say her dream came true. She's now one of our senior first officers, flying the 787. She's also the founder of the Be Sweet Company, and mother to three small children." If you share a career path you wish you'd have pursued, such as a forest ranger, this could inform your interviewer that you are not happy in your current career path, and might leave the company in the near future in favor of other pursuits. A hiring manager will be able to tell a lot about your personality by learning about your other career interests, and consider other positions or career paths within their company which would be a good fit for you, and which you may not have considered. If you could do anything over, what would you do, and why, and how can Virgin Atlantic help you get there?

"I would take the same direction! I love what I do, and wouldn't change a thing. This industry brings a lot of excitement and fulfillment to my life."

"I would have got in the door sooner or at least tried sooner. I’ve never been happier than I am now working in the aviation industry and perhaps if I’d taken a more direct route I wouldn’t have the experience in customer service and ground crew I do today but my ambition of taking my aviation career to the skies, where it belongs might already be a reality."

"I would not change the path I am on. My career choices have been stepping stones for this career, Aviation is something that makes me feel alive and is my passion. Combining this with the thrill of customer service, passion, spontaneity, and safety, is a dream come true."

Tell me about a time when communication became an issue when working on a team.

"I worked on a team to solve a problem that could have potential effects on our ability to grow the business and reach our goals. Each person on the team was tasked with a different aspect, such as gathering data and analyzing it. We came together to discuss the results but couldn't seem to agree. We were struggling to listen to each person's opinion. I explained my observation, and I suggested we give each person a chance to talk through their findings and opinions, which helped us take a more collaborative approach."

A huge part of teamwork is supporting the goals of the team as a whole, as well as each member to ensure everyone works well together. Therefore, how well everyone communicates with one another is integral to effective collaboration. As Virgin puts it, every one of your team member's "actions and behaviours resonate with us and subconsciously influence our everyday choices. There's so much to be gained from working with a collective of people who support each other to achieve great things. It's therefore incredibly important to surround yourself with people who complement you, aid your self-development, and most importantly, allow you to shine." So offer an example of when you identified a communication issue somewhere in your team, and what you did to smooth it out and reinforce a positive and collaborative environment.

"My current company recently went through a merger which caused a lack of communication between the team as thoughts of job security flood people. I suggested my department head that we have a team building event. Gathering everyone together to remind them that we are still a team was very helpful."

"Last month we had a cancelled flight whereby the staff member at the gate told passengers there was nothing they could do to help and to contact the airline. I was checking in the next flight and had no information regarding this and was aware we could transfer the passengers to the next available one on sight. This created confusion. I took it to management to get clarification and comms was issued for clear understanding to solve passenger concerns."

"An example of this is in a busy restaurant service when the kitchen team and the front-of-house staff struggle to effectively communicate. For example, we put customer notes on the tickets when they are sent through to the kitchen, sometimes they do not understand these requests or, simply don't abide by them. Therefore, orders come out wrong, this is understandably frustrating for the staff and the customers. Therefore, I suggested after service we collaborate and find a way that is more effective for everyone. We resolved over a 15-minute conversation and service remained smooth."

How would you rate your communication skills?

"I rate my communication skills as a 9/10 as I will, on occasion, have times when I am not as clear as I would like to be. My supervisor and co-workers will attest to my clear and concise communication skills."

Virgin Atlantic flies millions of passengers to over 30 destinations, with more than 8,000 workers, and even more passengers whose safety and comfort they need to ensure. Therefore, communication needs to be clear at all times. So Virgin offers all of their flying staff "human factors training, which is a unique form of training all about teamwork and communication." Such communication courses typically cover every aspect of communication, including written, verbal and nonverbal communication, visual communication, active listening and contextual communication. They also typically cover empathy, situational non-defensive communication, validation, and mirroring, among other techniques.

When answering, communicate as effectively as possible. This includes approaching whatever topic you cover without assumption and with humility. Never speak with conviction unless you are sure of the facts. Make sure your answer is coherent, clear, concise, and emphasize how you take every measure to be empathetic and courteous to your customers while understanding their needs.

"Communication is essential in the airline industry. You could have a passenger who is afraid of flying or has some other issues going on, so being empathetic and intuitive, as well as sensitive to their needs, is paramount. I would rate my communication skills as a 7 out of 10 because there is always room for improvement. Because I am an open leader, my team will let me know if I need to clarify anything. Communication needs to run smoothly, both ways."

"My communication skills are fielded by my emotional intelligence. Therefore I would rate them high. I can sense others' emotions and tend to read them well. I am not perfect and can sometimes get bogged down in details. I’ve found my approachable nature means passengers and colleagues are willing and able to challenge me to clarify points."

Working in the aviation industry means this skill isn't just important, it's absolutely essential for safety and the smooth running of in-flight service. Whether you have prior experience in the airline industry or transferable skills, share those skills, whether hard skills or interpersonal, that would align with the skills their ideal candidates would possess. "There are lots of qualities that we look for in our cabin crew. But above all, we need people who are resilient, supportive, caring, hands on and positive. We take pride in the fact that our cabin crew are from all walks of life, which means you don't need previous cabin crew experience to join us."

"I'd say that I have a lot of stamina, can totally be on my feet for hours and hours at a time. I am resilient, and very supportive, caring, hands on and positive. In fact, many of my coworkers have called me their pillar, which is an honor."

"I absorb and retain knowledge fast which makes me a reliable worker. I already am well known for my endless hours at work with colleagues saying there isn’t a shift you’re not on, or you’re always here. It’s my resilience that facilitates that and every passenger gets my best. Miles are walked around terminals every day and a farewell smile is seen even with the greatest of delays."

Think about a difficult boss, professor or coworker. What made him or her difficult? How did you successfully interact with this person?

"I once worked at a locally owned shop where the owner was very demanding. When the owner would walk into the store, employees would announce over their headset system that the owner was in the building, so that everyone felt prepared for his entrance into their department. The owner had great intentions; however, his people skills were a little rough. I could see that he meant well, and I recognized that he wanted to do a lot of good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as they came out. When communicating with someone, you should always consider their intentions first."

Your interviewer is curious what you would consider difficult, how strong your interpersonal skills are, and how well you work with personalities from different perspectives and backgrounds than your own. How you answer could also be informative of whether you have issues with those in positions of authority. "To get us off the ground every day, there's lots of hard work involved with lots of different kinds of people doing different jobs. It's the fact we all love the airline, believe in what we do and have a lot of fun doing it that really helps us pull together to create the fantastic customer service that we've become world famous for." This is an opportunity to show your interviewer that you can adapt and work well with most personalities, despite and perceivable differences. Offer a non-contentious challenge you faced with someone who you had a professional relationship with. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone and end your example on a positive note.

"I once worked for an executive who was very difficult in meetings and with interacting with groups of others. I took it upon myself to help this person interact better with others. When she would delegate, others would say she barked orders and backtalk about this person. But that wasn't helping her grow. I would try to help by backing her up and reiterating what she was trying to say to the group more professionally. It took some time, but she learned to adapt in a way that made people more receptive to her."

"One of my flaws is getting in with people who don’t rate my quality. This happens rarely but when it does I remind myself that they are similar to me just act differently. They expect excellence and where I try to instill that in others they aim to do it themselves. Recently when dealing with a particular agent it was a new airline where I had been the SME that allowed them to see I was someone they could rely on."

"I understand through my research and exposure to your company that customers always come first. I wholeheartedly agree that the customer must be taken care of, even beyond their expectations. I am always willing to lend a hand, and am a happy person, which creates a positive environment for customers."

When sharing your brand of customer service, try to frame it in the context of what it would be like working with Virgin Atlantic. Tie in your service standard with your knowledge of the company. "We're all about making sure our customers' travel experience is the best in the industry."

"I have worked in customer service since I was 16. Roles with great demands all of them. I may have moved around but my dedication to customers has been unquestionable."

"I am very dedicated, and would show my appreciation for the role by being a reliable team member of Virgin Atlantic. In my most recent position I was often recognized for being flexible with my availability. I believe in being 30 minutes early for work. I always rise to the occasion when I am needed, whether covering someone else's shifts or being asked to go above and beyond the call of duty. But I have friends far and wide, and this lifestyle often allows me to connect with many of them."

"I take it in stride and learn from it what I can. I don't shy away either, but carry on and try my best to be graceful in such situations. Experiencing a setback is always disappointing, and can be a bit disheartening, but I understand that it happens from time to time. If I experience a major setback, I will take a few moments to debrief with my manager and discuss what I could have done differently. Then, I move on!"

"I have taken industry-related safety and customer service training with company ABC. In addition to this training, I have four years of industry experience."

"All of our pilots and crew have undertaken intensive specialist training to earn those fabulous golden wings. "Cabin crew have to go through safety training every year. But it's more than just once a year. Before each flight, they're questioned on procedures to make sure they know exactly what to do should they need to put their training into practice." All that training begins in the rig, Virgin Atlantic's training facility. Share any prior experience you've had in this regard. But more importantly, emphasize the value you placed on that training, what you learned and retained from it, and how you put it into practice every day. It’s one of my best natural instincts."

Do you have any formal training in First Aid or CPR?

"I do not currently hold a valid CPR and First Aid certification; however, I am happy to complete this requirement right away."

First Aid and CPR training is a requirement for many roles in the airline industry. In most cases, such training is provided by the airlines themselves. In fact, "not only does Virgin Atlantic take their first aid seriously, but one in five cabin crew members is trained in mental health first aid". So inform your interviewer of any training you've you had, and any current certifications you possess. If haven't earned any yet, express your enthusiasm to do so.

"The airline industry is full of sudden changes, most frequently, when flight times are changed or there are problems with a passenger or with the plane or gates. I am great at adapting on short notice, and think quickly on my feet."

"All the time. As I work in an airport currently with 38 easy Jet flights a day I am constantly dealing with delays cancellations and issues with aircraft. The bottom line is I’ve got a job to do and until I’m told it’s not what I need I will be flexible to the needs as I am told them. It’s one of the most exciting and challenging things in the industry - and I’m already used to that."

The airline industry is full of unexpected scenarios. When have you faced an unexpected difficulty?

"I faced unexpected difficulties frequently in my previous position. The company was in financial strain, and some days we are not able to deliver the customer experience that we should. I overcame this by giving everything I had when it comes to service. I strove to leave a good impression. Then, the biggest difficulty was my unexpected lay off during the last recession. I had to adapt to a new economy and search deeply for other skills and opportunities. I was able to earn enough to avoid financial strain and am quite proud of my ability to be versatile when required."

How you manage yourself when things don't go according to plan will reveal a great deal about your character and your emotional intelligence. Although it is natural and expected to respond to such events emotionally, it is how you conduct yourself that equates top your emotional intelligence. "These things happen all the time, whether a passenger gets too drunk, or breaks something in the bathroom, or we get their meal wrong, or a passenger faints or whatever. Just think fast, remain calm and collected, and make everyone feel valued and taken care of, crew and passengers alike."

"At the hotel, every day we get a list of who is coming and how many guests we have so we had to set up the restaurant for the amount of guests. Just after a big group of six turned up asking for a table I checked with the chefs to make sure we could cater for them and then quickly set up a new table for them. They were very apologetic that they hadn't booked but very grateful and appreciative that I managed to get them seated and didn’t have to turn them away."

"Unexpected difficulties currently are mainly around aggressive and violent passengers. My job is to protect the airline crew and passengers of whatever plane I’m boarding. If I’m concerned I will step in what happens after that is dependent on a million factors only a few I can control. I make sure I do what I can to diffuse but am ultimately willing to decide on denial of travel or how I need to report it."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."
