"I feel that the most influential form of media today is social media and online content. As a whole, the human race wants fast, easy to consume, entertainment news. Our rate of consumption is unprecedented, and the fastest way to access it is through online content sharing."

"There are many important forms of media today - so many, in fact, that people seem to be getting overwhelmed. I would still say that traditional media, in the form of television and the daily news, is at the top when it comes to the number of people influenced and the quality of the content being distributed."

"The most impactful form of media is social media and TikTok to be exact. so many artists get discovered by TikTok from people sharing dancing or adding music to an original video."

Is compensation the most critical factor for you when taking a new job?

"Salary is important to me because I know that I am skilled and well educated. With that said, I do look at the full picture which includes factors such as benefits and the amount of paid vacation time."

The interviewer would like to know how much emphasis you put on pay when considering a new position. In addition to compensation, there are many other factors in a fulfilling career. "Several factors are important to me when taking a job. Compensation is a driving component but so is the company mission, culture, benefits, and location. I am looking to have an easier commute than I currently experience."

How often do you take work home with you?

"In the entertainment biz, one must always be willing to work whenever the creative moment hits you. I have a notebook with memos on my current projects that I often add ideas to at all hours of the day and night."

There may be some overtime expectations in this role with UMG, and the interviewer wants to know that this is a concept you are willing to embrace. "I take my work home with me whenever it is necessary. Some internships have held, I work from home nearly every day. Other roles, such as my current position, I do extra work from home just a couple of times per week."

Would you consider yourself a creative person?

"I am someone who alternates back and forth with the right/left brain, but I will always consider myself a very creative person. I admire the creativity and unconventional thinking in the entertainment business and musical arts."

Talk to the interviewer about any interest that you have in creative activities and how you have implemented your creative desires in the workplace. Even if you do not consider yourself to be a 'creative person,' there is a significant change that you have made creative minded decisions in your career.

"I consider myself creative! I have had a flair for the arts and thinking outside of the box, ever since I was a child. My mother says I danced before I could walk and I always loved to take on new creative projects."

How do you handle a larger than average workload?

"When I have a large workload on my plate, I do not stress over the tasks that are in front of me. Rather, I make a simple plan of which tasks are a high priority and which tasks are a lower priority. The higher priority tasks, I complete first. Through this system, I can focus on my tasks individually, rather than stress out by the multitude of tasks ahead of me."

The interviewer at UMG wants to know that you can handle the workload required of you in this position and that you will not become overwhelmed if/when workloads unexpectedly increase. "I would say that pretty much every company I have worked for has valued diversity. Working with people from all walks of life help shed different perspectives and identify potential problems faster."

The music industry is full of diversity, and the interviewer would like to know that you are accustomed to working with a broad range of people. Are you accustomed to working with a very large or diverse team of individuals? Assure the interviewer that you can handle an environment that offers diversity.

"In university, diversity is everywhere, and I love it! I have always been exposed to diverse environments, and I am thankful for that."

"Yes, every company I have ever worked for, for the most part, was very diverse. we all come from different places even in the working world."

Tell me about your experiences giving presentations in front of large groups.

"Presenting to large groups is a big part of successfully rolling out new artist campaigns. I have experience preparing the deck to be presented to ensure it is simple and thorough. I utilize different communication techniques to make a presentation fun, interesting, and engaging."

Public speaking can be intimidating! Did you know that the fear of public speaking is the #1 phobia? It comes ahead of the fear of death and the fear of spiders! It is okay to find public speaking a bit intimidating but do assure the interviewer that you are capable of communicating well in front of large groups. Have you taken any courses or training in public speaking? Perhaps you have so much experience that it comes second nature. Assure the interviewer that you are capable of giving presentations. If you have given presentations, you can also mention the topic, what the setting was, and to how many people you presented.

"I do not have a lot of experience in presenting to large groups. Perhaps, 4-6 people at most from my time in post-secondary. I am a confident public speaker and am sure that I could present in front of many people."

Tell me about yourself.

"I would say that I am both analytical and creative, I'm extroverted at times, but like to hunker down and work on my own to knock out projects. When not at work, I love attending musicals, museums, and traveling. Not only is it something I love, but also I think it helps me expand my horizons on how I approach my creative work."

When an interviewer asks an open-ended question like this, it can be challenging to know where to begin...and end! Do you have a big career goal that, right now, seems unattainable?

"I have a huge career goal that involves me completing my MBA while working full time. I know it will take a great deal of dedication and discipline and it has been done before. I feel that this level of education will greatly assist me in this career as I will have a fuller understanding of entertainment law and international business."

The interviewer would like to know more about your most significant goals when it comes to your career. Have you ever heard author Jim Collins' thoughts on the importance of building a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal (BHAD)? The concept is embraced by many organizations where they believe that every person and company should have an ambitious long-term goal that seems near impossible to reach. You can read more about it in Jim's book, 'Built to Last.' Keep your answer career-related and as relative to this particular company as you can. You want to avoid saying that your BHAG is never to work again, or to work for their competition!

"I believe in the importance of setting meaningful career goals. When I dream of my ideal career pursuit, I am working towards becoming the executive assistant to the VP of this organization. I know it's a long way from an intern role, but I am willing to do what it takes to reach my goals!"

Tell me about a time when you used good judgment and logic to solve a problem.

"Logic is a huge part of the creativity in music and entertainment marketing, believe it or not. When I take on a new project, I always use logic to discover what the biggest pain point is. Using the logic and the thought process of our customers, I create a marketing strategy from there."

The interviewer wants to hear about a particular situation where you used good judgment to solve a work problem. Be sure to showcase your logic and reasoning abilities. Share a brief overview of the problem, discuss the pro/cons of each decision you could have made, and tell the interviewer why the solution you chose was the best.

"I use good logic every day! As an intern for my company's executive, I face a multitude of scheduling problems. Just yesterday I used logic by figuring out how to arrange their schedule through the path of least resistance. I called the most flexible appointments to reschedule, and worked my way down the list from there."

What was the most significant change you have had to deal with in your career?

"The biggest change that I have faced in my career so far would be when my previous company went through a major merger. We had to adapt to new processes and management which was quite challenging. In the end, it worked out well for the company, in a financial perspective, so the changes were well worth the challenges we faced initially."

The record label business undergoes many changes as the industry shifts. The interviewer would like to know the types of challenges you have had to face in your career. You need to show UMG that you can remain productive in the face of change and that you are resilient. Assure the interviewer that you can adapt to significant changes in a professional manner.

"The biggest change I have dealt with in my career is when my company closed their PA location, and I was asked to relocate to VA. It was a risk on my part, but I chose to follow the company to their new location. It paid off as I continued another five years of success there."

"When I was a truck driver for a towing company, the company merged with an auto shop and I had to switch my role from driving and the first responder to a B2B Account Executive. The significance it has on my career is that even though it was a risk for me to switch careers, it paid off and has given me a lot of new opportunities that have changed my career."

How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

"I feel best when I know how my hard work has positively impacted another person. In my current role, our marketing director will often share our customer satisfaction surveys in our office meetings. If my name is mentioned, I cannot help but grin from ear to ear."

The interviewer would like to know what motivates you to be an over-achiever in the workplace. We all want recognition in some way for our accomplishments in the workplace. Perhaps you enjoy surprise gifts, financial perks, public attention, kind words, added responsibilities, or title promotions. "I am a highly competitive person who is compensation driven. I like to recognition for my accomplishments through monetary bonus' or contests where the stakes are high."

How would you market an artist when you do not enjoy their work?

"I understand that not everyone at UMG will like absolutely every talent that is signed. That's just part of the job, and it's good to have preferences when it comes to taste in music. That's part of what makes us unique. If I were asked to market an artist whom I did not particularly enjoy, I would work just as hard to market and promote them as if they were my all-time favorite. Through the process, I would likely develop a new appreciation for the work!"

Without explicitly discussing any artists that you do not care for, try talking more about the approach you would take if Universal Music Group asked you to help market them. Setting your musical tastes or personal preferences aside, would you work hard to ensure this artist got the most out of their record deal?

"My personal preferences would never have an impact on how hard I would work for an artist signed with Universal Music Group. Whether I enjoy their work or not, it's my job to help them succeed, create profit opportunities for the label, and operate at 100% capacity every day."

From your knowledge, what is the primary purpose of a record label?

"I believe the purpose of a record label is to coordinate the production and manufacturing of a musical artist or band's work. A label will then lead efforts in marketing, promotion, and distribution. Copyright enforcement on behalf of the artists, their songs, and their videos is also a large part of a record label's job. Lastly, record labels and their scouts actively work on talent scouting and the development of new artists."

Record labels such as Universal Music Group have a few purposes which include: - Marketing of recorded music - Marketing of music videos - New artist recruitment & development - Music publishing - Copyright enforcement - Distribution Discuss what you believe to be the primary purpose of a record label.

"The primary purpose of a label is to sign talented artists and then represent their work. These efforts could include marketing, campaigns, promotions, and even distribution. A record label also works hard to protect copywritten material on behalf of the artists."

With which sector of the music and entertainment industry are you least experienced?

"When it comes to the music and entertainment industry, unions, and guilds are the areas where I am least experienced. I am aware that many artists are part of a union; however, I am not entirely sure how those union agreements impact the work done here at Universal Music Group. I am eager to learn the inner workings of topics such as this."

Similar to, 'What is your greatest weakness?', this question asks you to disclose the area where you are the least knowledgeable. It's essential that you highlight the area where you are least experienced while still showing the interviewer that you are confident in your ability to learn.

"I am least experienced when it comes to entertainment law both locally and internationally. I have performed some research and read many articles; however, I feel it will take more dedication from me to grasp the complexities of entertainment law."

How does your post-secondary education apply to the music and entertainment industry?

"I have a Masters' in Law and Entertainment which gave me top-notch industry knowledge from the start of my career. The courses I took helped me to develop skills in short and long-term strategic planning in this competitive industry. I also learned a great deal about project management, performing arts, and cultural entrepreneurship."

The interviewer would like to know more about your post-secondary education, and how it will benefit Universal Music Group, should you be hired. Expand on what you already have laid out on your resume and be prepared to discuss how particular coursework will translate well into this role. "I believe that the digital world is changing the record label game at a fast pace. I think that the biggest challenge is keeping up to date with these changes, and pivoting quickly enough to remain relevant. From what I have seen, UMG has fought hard and won when it comes to maintaining relevancy in this industry. You have done so by holding records for Grammy nominations, nearly half of all nominations this year, in fact. "

There is a lot of discussion surrounding record labels and the need for them in our ever-changing digital world. Some of the challenges that Universal Music Group may be facing today include: - Streaming services gaining market leverage - Artists becoming more educated and demanding more from their label - Difficulty adapting to changing digital environments - Loss of control when it comes to recording and distribution options - Significant loss of revenue over the yearsDiscuss in a positive light, the issues that UMG may be facing, and how you believe they have been overcoming these challenges.

"From what I have observed while preparing for this interview, one of the biggest challenges a record label faces today are the streaming services out there who are gaining market leverage and creating a loss of revenue for labels and artists. I believe that UMG has overcome this through brand loyalty as well as the fact that you have signed artists with a highly loyal fan base."

"These days people are self-teaching a lot more and feel that they can do all the work themselves, but they don't realize the amount of effort and tools needed to keep all avenues in one accord. Having businesses handle responsibilities will still allow the creative person to rely on record labels. Record labels have a vital part in providing resources in place to keep the business operating at a certain level."

Talk about a recent entertainment campaign that caught your eye.

"I believe that the best marketing campaigns are ones where the artists meet their fans where they are. One example of this that I find unforgettable is DJ Khaled's use of Snapchat. Here, he talks about his path to happiness which has made him a voice in internet culture. Aside from his music, Khaled is now known for his catchphrases like 'I appreciate you' and 'You the best.' His loyal following has remained and he continues to broaden his reach."

Universal Music Group puts big dollars into marketing and promoting their artists. The interviewer wants to see that you understand the difference between a mediocre campaign and an effective one. Think about the latest entertainment advertisement that you saw, heard, or witnessed. Why did it catch your eye, and what made it so memorable? Be sure to show the interviewer your enthusiasm for marketing and promotions.

"One campaign that has stuck with me is one from Lee Scott, a hip-hop artist from the UK. When he dropped his album, he first released an exclusive premium version to 100 fans. Later, he created an exclusive bundle pack and charged even more for the next 100 fans. Lastly, upon general release, he charged premium rates by including merchandise into the packs. This slow-release strategy picked up a lot of PR and created a great amount of anticipation among his fan base."

"A recent campaign that caught my eye is from the artist B.o.B. He has a Patreon account where he let his loyal fans of over 10 years listen to his new album before its actual release. This campaign is great because it allows him as an independent artist to directly interact with his fans and let them feel like they are a part of his journey as an artist. and it allows him to roll out the project with pre-sales."

What do you think about the future of record labels?

"I believe that record labels are a must for any serious artist and, because of that, companies like UMG aren't going anywhere. What we will be doing is pivoting our focus more digitally than we ever have before. The competition will continue to be fierce when it comes to online and social marketing efforts for artists; however, I am ready and prepared to bring the ingenuity and grit that it takes to remain a stand-out in the entertainment industry."

Since you are interviewing at Universal Music Group, it would be in your best interest to be prepared with some positive statements on record labels and their future outlook. Record companies have been around since the dawn, but there has been a lot of chatter regarding their footing in the entertainment industry. Speak to the interviewer about where you believe record labels will be, in the future.

"I see record labels relying less on dollars for records sold and more on royalties from streaming services, merchandise, and endorsements. I also foresee changes when it comes to ownership of intellectual property. Artists have more tools available to them to control outcomes now - many more than they had in the 1990s for instance. In the future, I see a healthier collaboration between record labels and their artists."

If Universal Music Group hired you today, what would you accomplish first?

"When we were speaking earlier, about sales targets in this position, you mentioned that most new sales professionals hit their KPI's after 120 days. If hired today, my goal would be to exceed my KPI's after the first 90 days. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."

When you start a new position, it is essential to set a goal on how you will make a positive impact quickly after being hired. Tell the interviewer what your impact goal is, should you be the successful candidate.

"If hired today, I would start with analyzing all quantifiable data from the last month, quarter, and year to identify any bottlenecks or shortfalls and set a plan to correct them."

"First and foremost, I follow UMG on Twitter for important live updates on what's happening in music entertainment news. I also follow a lot of top artists on Instagram, and I read Billboard magazine regularly. I fully understand the importance of being up to date on entertainment news and industry happenings."

"My top sources for entertainment news are all of the music awards! I watch the Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, the Grammy's, the MTV Music Awards and more. Also, I follow many top artists and labels on social media which provides me with up to the minute entertainment news."

Universal Music Group has an illustrious client list which includes the best of Hollywood. How will you remain professional in the presence of the world's hottest celebrities?

"Celebrities are talented people; however, they are still just people at the end of the day. Rest assured, I would treat these people with respect, give them the privacy they need, and answer to their needs."

Whether you are starting in the mailroom, and working your way into an agent role with UMG, or you bring years of experience in the entertainment industry, the interviewer needs assurance that you will always act appropriately and professionally in the face of fame. It's important that, even in the presence of the worlds' hottest celebrities, I maintain my cool while respecting their privacy and personal space."

"I was always told that my first impression is everything. Being professional is at the forefront of the first impression so to me knowing how to conduct myself in a professional manner no matter who is in front of me is a priority."

Where do you find new music?

"I like to hear about new artists through a variety of resources. First, I subscribe to the Universal Music blog where I get articles and information on newly signed talent and up and coming artists. I have been a long-term reader of Billboard magazine as well."

It is essential to the interviewer that you bring a keen and genuine interest in the music and entertainment industry. Universal Music Group works hard for their artists to gain exposure to new fans, through multiple platforms. Talk to the interviewer about where you go most frequently to find new music. "The internet has opened endless possibilities when it comes to new artist promotion. If I were to put a plan into place for increasing record sales for lesser-known artists, I would begin with social media marketing efforts on YouTube and Instagram; primarily with Instastories. I would also seek out a collaboration between the new artist and a better-known artist from the UMG or sister label."

Universal Music Group knows very well how to promote their lesser-known artists; however, they want to see if you can think creatively. The way you respond will also show the interviewer what you know about record labels and how things operate in the music and entertainment business. Discuss how you would use the marketing trends of today to boost new artists' exposure.

"The opportunities that we have today when it comes to reaching potential new fans is remarkable. I would begin by reaching out to music blogs, podcasts, and online magazines who need to put out fresh content. I would pitch a feature on the up and coming artist and then roll with the momentum from there, approaching more digital media sources."

"Thanks to the internet you can target your audience directly even if you're a small creator. So many different ways to promote a lesser-known artist but here is one, there are look-a-like audiences you can tap into, if you feel your music is similar to the weekend, you can target his audience that mirrors his demographics, and do a 30/60/90 press rollout to build awareness to you or your brand."

Who is your favorite band or musician, represented by Universal Music Group? Why are they your favorite?

"My favorite artist represented by UMG is Drake. I like him because he can reinvent his sound and style often enough that keeps him relevant without losing his original fan base from when he was just a kid from Canada. I mean, he has his own memes! What isn't to love."

I believe that the best way UMG competes with these other two competitors is to work hard to sign the worlds' most celebrated artists to your core label. This approach includes being competitive when it comes to what you offer the artist. Also, working hard to scout hot new talent is a significant factor in your ability to remain ahead of your competitors."

The 'Big 3' record labels include: - Sony BMG - Warner Music Group - and, of course, Universal Music GroupThese three record labels own nearly 80% of the music market. Since you are interviewing for Universal Music Group be prepared to discuss the other competition. How do they compete with each other to have the best talent in the music and entertainment industry?

"The big three record labels are Sony BGM, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. Together, these three hold 80% of the music market. The best way to remain competitive is to continue gaining access to the world's core talent and signing them to your primary label. The second part of this strategy is to be the first to find and sign hot new talent."

The world of entertainment never sleeps. Are you willing to work long hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays?

"I currently work 60+ hour work weeks with a 24/7 cell phone and am on my email most of the day. I am prepared to work long and hard hours, doing what it takes to succeed in the entertainment industry."

The interviewer wants assurance that you understand the work at Universal Music Group isn't just schmoozing, attending celebrity events and being a part of posh promotions. The marketing efforts put into their latest releases and the fact that they have had successful collaborations with other artists on your label are strong indicators of future success."

"I know that your most well-known sister companies and labels include Interscope Records and Capitol Music Group. I have researched Universal Music Group extensively and was very interested in finding that you also own Def Jam Recordings. I am eager to learn even more about your diverse company."

Major record labels such as Universal Music will have sub-labels and other subsidiary companies to serve various genres of music and entertainment. Show the interviewer that you have done your homework on their company before your interview by listing a few of these things that you should know. Keep in mind that you don't need to start listing off every single subsidiary of Universal Music. You just have to show the interviewer that you are engaged and genuinely interested in their organization.

"I know that Universal Music Group has been around for decades, representing artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Your labels encompass multiple musical genres including hip hop, country, pop, and even jazz. The labels I am most familiar with include The Verve Label Group and Island Records."

"I know that Universal has at least 15 subsidiaries and labels and that they all are in some form of entertainment with a very diverse roster and catalog of music and content that distributes on a global scale. I am also interested in finding out about more of the things those companies do."

What are your 3 favorite forms of entertainment?

"My favorite forms of entertainment have always been reality tv, YouTube, and celebrity-based news. I find that these forms of entertainment spark my creativity and keep me informed on trends in the media."
