The car also incorporates self-driving technology which allows you to relax and let the vehicle perform many of the driving tasks such as automatic braking, lane departure avoidance, and even some rudimentary navigation. The ergonomic features make it comfortable and put the other features of the car within easy reach. The controls are intuitive and easy to learn. The Tesla Model Y is probably one of the best-engineered vehicles available today. "

"As a product specialist, I am always looking for ways to improve common, everyday items. One of these items is a toothbrush. I've thought many times about different ways to improve the effectiveness of a toothbrush. Some of my ideas include cushioning the handle to make it more comfortable, using different lengths of bristles to reach between the teeth, putting toothpaste in the handle which would be applied to the bristles with a small lever, or providing removable heads which could be exchanged when the bristles wear out."

This is another form of a use case question. Use cases present you with scenarios and then ask you to resolve them. Most often, they involve issues or products relative to Tesla. However, sometimes the interviewer will ask you about something completely unrelated so they can better understand your general product specialist skills. You should be prepared for these types of questions before going to the interview and have several use cases ready.

Two Tesla senior stakeholders disagree about the importance of including a feature in a new product. How would you get them to agree on whether or not to include it?

"When a situation arises in which two senior Tesla product stakeholders disagree about an aspect of the product development cycle, the first thing I would do is actively listen to each of their positions so I thoroughly understand them. I would acknowledge the validity of each person's opinion and then seek to find a solution by negotiating with each stakeholder, suggesting items on which they can compromise, and persuading them to accept the conditions that will lead to the best outcome for the product and Tesla. This requires a great deal of diplomacy, understanding, and patience."

It is not uncommon for two senior product stakeholders to disagree about a new product's features, functions, or other characteristics. As a product specialist, you must resolve these conflicts and ensure that all the Tesla product stakeholders agree on what direction to move in. This requires skills such as active listening, diplomacy, negotiation, and persuasion. You should mention these skills when answering the interviewer's questions.

How would you explain the role of a product specialist to someone who was not familiar with the job?

"I am often asked at social occasions what I do. Suppose the person to whom I'm speaking is not familiar with this role. "While I have never used the Agile methodology myself, I am familiar with it and understand its basic concepts. I've worked with engineering teams that employ Agile and admire how this methodology expedites the development process and results in products with no outstanding issues needing to be resolved at the end of the development cycle. I've also participated in the daily stand-ups the team conducts to identify issues, develop solutions for them, review the progress made the previous day, and discuss upcoming activities. I'm confident I can get up to speed with Agile and quickly integrate myself into this process here at Tesla if hired."

Even though a product specialist does not perform engineering duties, they should be familiar with the methodology used by the engineering teams at Tesla to develop products. "The company that I believe provides exceptional customer service is Zappos. They have created a culture that prioritizes customer happiness and referrals to new customers. Everyone in their organization, whether an executive or someone working on the loading dock, spends several weeks in their customer service department before beginning their regular job. They are trained to resolve any customer service issue quickly and efficiently. Zappos offers free returns for all of their products and will even accept the return if it's obvious that the customer has used the item. The company holds daily, weekly, and monthly contests and recognizes the customer service teams with the highest rating from their clients. This has earned them the reputation of being one of the most customer-focused organizations in the clothing industry. Telsa may want to consider incorporating some of these practices, with the exception of free returns, into your customer service strategy."

An interviewer at Tesla will ask this question to learn more about your definition of great customer service and your understanding of how this is achieved. By asking this question, they indicate that they either have a customer service issue that they hope you can help them resolve or that part of your job will be maintaining or improving the level of customer service they already provide. If you're familiar with Tesla and its customer service operations, you can use the company you are interviewing with to answer this question. If not, choose a company well-known for its customer service that is in a different industry and not a competitor of the company you are interviewing with.

Do you ever cut corners to get a product to market per the release schedule?

"While it is important to get a product to market on time, I'm reluctant to cut corners to accomplish this. When beginning a product development project, I always develop a schedule that details the tasks required to develop the product and a timeline to ensure that the product is released to the market on the target date. During the development cycle, I monitor the team's progress and make adjustments when necessary. Occasionally, I ask the team to put in some extra time either in the evening or on weekends to ensure that the product timeline is met. I've found this methodology to be successful and have never had to cut corners to meet a delivery schedule."

This is a tricky question. The Tesla interviewer is asking you to choose between cutting corners or releasing a product on the market late. By asking this question, the interviewer is trying to determine what your priorities are. The strategy for responding to this question may not be choosing one or the other but instead describing to the interviewer how you could avoid cutting corners and still bring the product to market on time.

"Having evaluated your current line of electric vehicles, I have come up with some recommendations that you may want to consider incorporating to make your products more functional and competitive. For example, I recommend providing options for opting out of some of the auto-driving and navigation features so the driver can have more direct control of the vehicle. This will broaden your market to car aficionados who appreciate the design and function of a Tesla vehicle but prefer to sometimes drive the car themselves and rely less on automation."

The criteria I will use to decide whether to say no to a proposal include how strategic the initiative is, if it will contribute to Tesla's business objectives, the amount of time and resources it will require, and if I can apply these effectively and efficiently."

Nobody likes to say no, but sometimes it is necessary. Organizational resources are limited, even at a company like Tesla, and product specialists need to focus on product development projects that will help the organization accomplish its business objectives. The Tesla interviewer wants to confirm that you are comfortable saying no to fewer strategic opportunities or competing requirements. I also try to determine if the resources can be shared or if there are alternative resources that could be used to complete the task without a negative impact on the other project tasks."

This may sound similar to a question you were asked earlier in the interview. Interviewers at Tesla will commonly ask similar questions throughout the interview to make sure that you answer the questions consistently. This will not be a problem as long as you provide honest answers to each of the questions you are asked. "There is nothing more important than staying user-focused when developing a product. If you start with the user requirements, use cases, and preferences, you will develop a product that is in demand and can be easily marketed. The next product development phase involves incorporating design elements that make the product practical, cost-effective, easy to manufacture, and competitive. Using this approach has helped me successfully develop a wide range of products for different applications."

This may seem like an obvious question, but there is a purpose behind it. Most contemporary organizations like Tesla consider user requirements and preferences as the highest priority when developing a new product. However, some organizations still focus on internal features such as costs, ease of production, and other items that are more important to the organization than to their customers. "I believe it is most important for a product specialist working here at Tesla to be open to new ideas. My job is to synthesize this information and channel it into new product development or design."

Sales are the ultimate barometer for measuring the success of a product. No matter how well the product is designed and manufactured, it isn't successful if it doesn't sell. An example of this would be removing aesthetic features and adding ruggedization to consumer products intended for the industrial environment. Other alterations may include the overall design, providing spare parts, and of course the sales and marketing techniques used to address each distinct market segment."

It is not unusual for organizations to develop products for and market them to different customers and market segments. It is common for companies to have both consumer and business customers. Being able to develop, manage, and market products that address both of these audiences is critical.
