"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear-ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."

Calling ahead to inform your employer you've run into an issue that could result in arriving to work late will indicate a sense of teamwork and forward thinking. "I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen, we were taught, 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. "I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

In most states, it is illegal to ask if you own a motor vehicle to prevent a potential employer from holding any bias. Not having a car shouldn't affect one's ability to perform their job. Most employers ask if you have reliable transportation because it is a legal way to ask this same question, which centers around your attendance.Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need reliable transportation to get to work on time. Too often, employees with issues surrounding their attendance will use their bus schedule being irregular or their ride-share not showing up as reasons beyond their control for showing up late to work. However, this is perceived as a reflection of their time management skills more than anything. Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time. You don't have to explain how you get to work, as long as you get to work early and have a strong track record with your attendance.

"I take public transit; however, I find it very reliable. I was late to work only once last year due to a snowstorm that stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and always come to work on time."

We need reliable people on our team at Sysco. How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, but I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

Part of being a diligent employee is ensuring that you are always on time and present when expected. Your attendance impacts the rest of your team. Showing up early, getting the lay of the land, and warming up before you hit the ground running can shore up your success and that of the team. Showing up late can result in stress, panic, and confusion. It can also overburden others on your team who have to pick up your slack when you are running behind. "Last year while managing our weekend shift, I noticed a pretty solid opportunity to save on overtime hours. I created a presentation and gave it to my manager, who took it to upper management. The changes were implemented, and I was very proud of my suggestion."

"This happens quite frequently. In my last job, they were rolling out a pre-sale system and wanted to pay salary. How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?

"Whenever I have a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I try to learn their communication style and emulate it. Sometimes you have to relate to others in their style to be understood."

You cannot force others to communicate with you in the way you would prefer. However, those with above-average communication skills are adept at identifying when communication needs to be enhanced and can adapt their communication style to that of the lesser skilled communicator. In our retail stores, we take pride in our merchandising and displays. Do you consider yourself to be a creative person, capable of making an attractive retail display?

"I have a strong creative flair and enjoy creating attractive displays. I think I have enough experience in retail to understand what attracts a customer and what prompts them to purchase. The displays I have seen in your stores are fascinating, and I would love to be a part of that creative flair."

Although merchandising requires a great deal of creativity, it also requires skill and a thorough understanding of what fuels a person's impulse to buy. Share your relevant work experience and knowledge of merchandising and display building. Bring some photos with you to share. If you have unique ideas to share with Sysco regarding their current merchandising, let them know you've already put thought into it but would like to learn more about their logic and approach before making suggestions. "Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If I were unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

As a retail employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle a situation like this with poise while keeping the customer happy and adhering to the company's needs. When a customer's approach or expectations contradict a company policy, it is crucial to examine the true meaning of the adage - the customer is always right. The true meaning is that the customer is always listened to, heard, empathized with, and handled with respect and care. This doesn't mean they are always right and should be granted their every demand. It means they are valued and treated with consideration, respect, and appreciation. But a customer service representative is truly a representative of a brand, and the core responsibility is to be true to the brand. Considering these points, and the company's return policy, communicate how you handled such situations along these lines with care while protecting the company's assets.

"I have some dispute resolution training from my previous retail position and fully believe that flexibility needs to be offered in extreme situations."

"I would begin by listening to what the customer has to say; then, I will explain to the customer our return policy. If the customer is upset, I will calmly explain our policy further into detail and do my best to satisfy the customer and make sure that the customer is happy."

In a retail environment, staff turnover is often high. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift?

"I am more than willing to cover a shift for a co-worker if I can. I don't mind accepting overtime hours and consider myself a team player."

Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is aggressive towards you or a co-worker?

"If I had an aggressive and disrespectful customer, I would calmly but firmly ask them to calm down. If I needed to call security, I would do so. Everyone needs to remain respectful, and I would not hesitate to ask a customer to offer that respect in return."

"My current sales position is highly commission-based, so my colleagues and I are quite competitive. Despite being competitive, we have a great work environment where we help each other when someone is struggling to meet their quota. We coach each other on sales techniques and share success stories. The result has been a positive work environment with healthy competition."

The interviewer asks this question to determine whether you function well in a competitive environment. Keep your example relevant to the work setting. They want to know if you thrive in situations where a little friendly competition is introduced in the workplace or prefer more camaraderie and collaboration in a team setting. "Last week, I noticed my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some staff complained that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked a couple of overtime hours that day and caught her up on everything. It felt good to help but also benefited me."

"At a previous job, I identified an opportunity with my third-party carriers that were hauling our products. They were dropping our freight and driving back with empty trucks. I did some research and found out that if I was able to schedule backhaul opportunities, the third party would receive 20% of the revenue and my company would get 80%. This was a great opportunity to offset my distribution cost. This program generated 1.5MM annually."

"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed to. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

"Most challenging was when I managed all of operations and sales in the ____ ________. I was responsible for the entire fleet, managing third party, Corporate warehouses, drivers, and the entire sales team."

What are your salary expectations?

"I currently earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example, not excluding any bonuses, incentives, stock options, retirement and health benefits, or any other perks and rewards. Every form of compensation should be rolled into one. Be open and honest. Transparency is the best approach when salary-based questions arise. Strong math skills are an asset in any retail-based role but are not always necessary. If your math skills are a strong suit of yours, volunteer that. "Depending on the circumstance, I would observe, collect evidence, pull our managers aside, and deal with it discreetly. I'd tell them I want to remain anonymous and ask them to recruit others to gather their things before escorting them off the property. Whether they're my friend or not, I'd want them to be treated with dignity. Regarding any other actions, I would follow the company's policy accordingly. The last time I encountered this, the employee was asked to return the product and was fired. We also Eighty-Sixed them from all our stores and mailed their paycheck to their address. I'm a pretty good judge of character, so, luckily, I haven't faced this situation. I'd hate to lose a friend over something like this."

You are responsible for your responses and actions, regardless of their behavior and ethics. The interviewer will want to see how you address this situation. You'll want to exhibit integrity, not only in how you view the crime but in how you treat that coworker, as you should treat anyone, with discretion and tact. "I would probably express disappointment in my work friend for asking them to compromise my job and my integrity to cover their tracks. I'd probably tell them that I trusted them to never ask me such a thing and that I can't trust them to not ask me again. I'd tell them that I am responsible for my actions just as they are for theirs. I'd wish them luck in getting to work on time and not getting fired. I would tell them to reconsider their course of action and that as long as they don't ask anyone else to clock in for them, I might not inform management. I'd then tell them that the fate of our friendship is up to them at that point."
